Shortcast : Cognitive Dissonance
Monday Mar 21, 2022
Monday Mar 21, 2022
What happens when something becomes so intolerable that action is literally unavoidable?
This week we are exploring cognitive dissonance. Situations or events that conspire to take us in a direction that conflicts with our internal compass. The stuff that has us squirming when the world doesn’t meet our picture of how it should be. I am talking about values and ethics that guide how we live our lives and what we expect from others.
We might experience this when a boss makes a decision we don’t agree with and demands we comply. Or when a trusted friend asks us to be complicit in a lie. This is the stuff that is currently fueling the great resignation and this week we have witnessed an outstanding example.
I am talking about the inspired actions of Marina Ovsyannikova, the Russian journalist who jumped into view on the state-controlled evening news programme and declared "This is a lie, the war is a lie!" knowing that it was a massive risk that could put her life in danger.
Thankfully most of us will never experience that level of mismatch in our own lives. However this subject is equally important in defining our values and understanding how to recognize and respond to these important triggers.

Neil Seligman : Conscious Transformation
Wednesday Mar 16, 2022
Wednesday Mar 16, 2022
What happens when life delivers a message so loud, so clear that you have no choice but to take heed?
It is rare to get a message that clear, and to some extent, you need to be open to hearing it.
My guest on the show is Neil Seligman, A mindfulness coach, author and public speaker. But as you heard in the intro, he had a sudden realization that the career he had chosen was the wrong place for his star to rise.
Getting on in the legal profession is a long road; in Neil's case, it was five years of study and eight years in practice as a Civil Law Barrister. For those not familiar with the British legal system, that means he gets to wear a wig and black gown. Giving it all up to be a Mindfulness Practitioner before that word had any meaning was a big step into the unknown.
As a young man, Neil was academic; it came easy to him. At university, he loved acting, sports and living life. But he was shepherded into the legal profession as it was more lucrative than acting and very similar, (say I, with a smile on my face).
But as I mentioned before, you must be open to change to hear the message and Neil was not a stranger to the alternative sector. He discovered Reiki healing in his teens and went on to become a Reiki master way before he was a barrister. So he was already bridging two worlds when he heard the message and decided to leave.
But changing from what is seen to be a solid career does raise questions. He had to confront all the preconceptions from family and friends, as well as his own thoughts and feelings around money, identity and meaning.
In our conversation, we explore Neil's journey and the soul searching he went through to find his path. Join me for this conversation with Neil Seligman.

Shortcast: Hanging In There
Monday Mar 14, 2022
Monday Mar 14, 2022
On today's show, I am looking at some tools that could help you stay centred while those around you are losing it.
I am talking about the power of creativity, about taking care of what you read or watch and we explore why it is important to listen to your quiet voice
The world is not a happy place at the moment and the news and media will make it their job to feed us all of the gory detail on a 27/7 basis.
It is very difficult to avoid, and also highly addictive.
I am not immune to getting caught up and I have used every tool I have to keep me on point this week and for a while, there even that failed.
The point is we owe it to the world to share our gifts and that means we are responsible to manage our inner resolve and stay strong when the going is hard. The upside to that is when we do make a commitment that is when we received the greatest gift.
It is when we do the work that feeds us that is when we feel good when we get to feel alive.

Jane Taylor: - Mom, Biker, Warrior
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
Is there an 'unlived' adventure story lurking somewhere inside of you?
Lets face it, we all love a good adventure story. yet for most of us the fix generally comes through reading fiction or biographies, watching movies, or listening to podcasts and celebrating the hero's journey in somebody else. But what if it were your turn? What would you choose, and given the opportunity, would you actually say yes?
Today, not only do we get to hear Jane Taylor's story, we also get the opportunity to be part of her adventure. (details below).
When Jane Taylor's son Emmit graduated, her husband John had the idea to celebrate with a road trip. The plan was to buy three motorcycles and ride across country from Vermont to California and back. That is a 10,000 mile round trip, and for a Mom who hadn't been on a motorbike for 40 years, that's no small challenge!
Jane said Yes to the idea, even though she was terrified!
“I jumped in, because I tend to lead, but I was terrified.”
Motorcycles were in her family's blood when Jane was a child. In 6th-grade, her mother owned a motorcycle business, so her early years were around bikes and bikers. But her family sold the business and moved on, and riding a motorbike was now just a distant memory. In her teen years, writing was her thing; she went to college earned her degree in literature and music history and always knew writing would be part of her life, but not sure how.
On leaving college Jane skirted around, working in restaurants, cooking for a Baroque orchestra running a welding shop, and being an event organizer. But it was always writing that held her interest, so she eventually became a freelance 'pen for hire' and a professional CV writer.
But, at 50 years, old approaching mid-life, it was this family adventure that changed everything. The podcast is part of a celebration of that journey and the launch of her book “Spirit Traffic – A Mother's Journey of Letting Go” inspired by her travels and the gifts it gave her.
The book is out on April 19th 2022, and there is a book tour beginning in May. The fun part is that Jane and her husband John are reprising the adventure by travelling across the US, from New England to California, for readings at independent books shops and in people's homes.
So you can be part of the tour by hosting an event. All the details are here:-

Shortcast : Believing the Story
Sunday Mar 06, 2022
Sunday Mar 06, 2022
In today's show, we're going to explore why it's so critical to believe in your story and what happens if it runs out.
Last week would have been the 95th birthday of my father, so it seems fitting to explore his story and how I came to create the podcast through that journey.
Life is unpredictable, and when things feel uncertain, we look with hope for a better future. How we develop that hope into reality is by creating a vision or story where we achieve the goal or desired outcome.
Having a strong narrative and believing in that narrative, enables us to be resilient in the face of challenges and change. The problem, of course, is that life doesn't always manifest the picture we have been holding in our minds eye.
With the current situation, still dealing with COVID and now facing the prospects dealing with international conflicts, there's a lot of uncertainty around that threatens our internal peace of mind.
If you are struggling with your narrative or setting goals, join me in exploring some ways to re-discover the dreams and aspirations you might have left behind.

Tom Libelt : Music, Business & Life
Wednesday Mar 02, 2022
Wednesday Mar 02, 2022
Tom Libelt's story expresses the impact that a hard upbringing can have on a young man, how he experienced the realities of a corrupt communist country and the struggle as immigrants coming to America.
Tom was never going to follow the working path of his parents. His journey to wealth and freedom started with music, but he has owned a coffee shop, a retail store, a record label, created and filmed a documentary, and released two albums with five hits on top ten Polish radio. Today he has a thriving business in online course creation.
As I am on a break from editing, this show is a re-release. It was popular when it came out, and as it highlights the challenges many people face escaping communist rule, it seem pertinent to share it with you again today.

Shortcast : Staying Positive
Sunday Feb 27, 2022
Sunday Feb 27, 2022
How do we focus on staying positive in the face of all that is happening around us?
Our mental health and mindset are influenced but our environment and the narrative we are experiencing. Feeding our minds with negative stuff will shift how we feel about life. I call it the Wellness Spiral; for others, it may be a scale. Staying positive is about having a process that feeds you and keeps you moving forward.
In this show, we will explore some coaching tools I use to keep me moving up the Wellness Spiral rather than sliding down.
The world has changed significantly over the last two years, and with recent world events, the future is unclear. But we owe it to ourselves, our families and communities to stay strong, stay positive.
Like everyone, I am shocked, disappointed and just about every other expletive in my reaction to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. How did we get to this?
I cannot begin to understand how we got here. What I do know is getting drawn into the media storm around it will not help my equilibrium; it will not help me meet my goals and dreams or support my family or you, the wider audience.
What is worth remembering is that the media and social media like to feed us a negative message because that locks us into the story and keeps us viewing the adverts.
Check out my tips for keeping yourself grounded in your reality. The world is a wonderful, unique and beautiful place, and there are acts of kindness and love around us all of the time we just have to notice.

Jeff Harry : Permission to Play
Wednesday Feb 23, 2022
Wednesday Feb 23, 2022
I had such a laugh when I recorded this show with Jeff Harry back in the solemn days of lockdown in 2020. It brought a breath of fresh air because Jeff is a play coach, and in a serious world, this is something we need to reconnect with.
So, as I needed to take some time out from editing this week, I thought it would be good bring a bit of playful energy your way with this re-launch.
If nothing else, the last two years have shown us that adulting can become overwhelming and we need to find a way to find opportunities to bring joy and inspiration back into the field.
In this conversation, the key point Jeff brings is that we need to bring humour and play back into adult life, particularly in the workplace. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Jeff Harry.

Shortcast : Healthy Boredom
Sunday Feb 20, 2022
Sunday Feb 20, 2022
How would you like to be more creative, less stressed and more open to opportunity?
Today's show is about making space for boredom, does that sound crazy? Who wants to be bored? Well, it depends on the type of boredom you are experiencing. Yes, there are different types. Hot and cold.
Have you ever taken some time out with no plan, turned off the phone, stopped reading emails. I am sure some of that sounds like a recipe for disaster, but I want to assure you the rewards are worth the experiment.
We are exploring the importance of making space in life, stepping away from the busy and allowing time to just be. Because in that space, we rest, recharge and become open to the aspects of life that we are missing in the business of living.
When we make time for space and make it sacred, it feeds us on a whole new level.

Alexis Haselberger : Lazy Success
Wednesday Feb 16, 2022
Wednesday Feb 16, 2022
Some people let the day or week just sweep them along in a wave of things that need doing. That is a phrase that stuck with me from my conversation with Alexis Haselberger.
I was reminded of this again when a social media backlash was directed at Molly-Mae Hague the creative director of ‘PrettyLittleThing’ when she said on a podcast “we all have the same 24 hours in a day.” The backlash was about privilege, but the point is she was both right and wrong because the wealthier we are, the more we get to choose how we use our time. Yet even limited hours used wisely can make a massive difference between meeting our basic needs or creating the life we truly desire.
I have said before, watching Netflix and hoping things will get better is not going to solve anyone’s problems. However, if you are looking for the lazy route to success, this could be the show for you.
Alexis Haselberger is a super-organizer. Ever since childhood, she has planned her life, not because she is driven to a career or great achievement, but because she is a self confessed lazy person who wants to maximize her time doing what she wants. In her own words…
“My efficiency was driven by my laziness and I refer to myself as a very driven lazy person”
Today Alexis is a Time Management and Productivity Coach helping people do more with less stress. She offers coaching, workshops and online courses. She says it’s all about finding what works for you.
Please take this opportunity to join me in welcoming this conversion with Alexis Haselberger.

Shortcast : Commitment & Sacrifice
Sunday Feb 13, 2022
Sunday Feb 13, 2022
Today’s shortcast explores the relationship between sacrifice and commitment to goals, and how to avoid the pitfalls and dangers that this union brings.
Be it work, home, relationships or possessions we all make commitments in some form or other. The greater the goal or desire, the more we are likely to sacrifice to achieve or maintain it. These sacrifices usually put a strain on time, energy, finances or health, but what happens when the price becomes too high.
For as long as we can remember humans have made sacrifices in return for the promise of something better. Why is it we are prepared to do this?
Early in human existence, it would most likely have been connected to some sort of religious rituals or rites of passage, often in some form of payment to a deity in return for good fortune and may have included the sacrifice of a highly priced animal, a companion or even a child.
Thankfully we have mostly moved away from the blood sacrifice of a loved one, but we have not given up the idea of commitment and obligations in return for the hope of something better.
When the sacrifices made have become all-consuming or unhealthy, at what point do we make the decision that enough is enough?

Gemma Perkins : Where Schools Fail
Wednesday Feb 09, 2022
Wednesday Feb 09, 2022
This week I am talking to Gemma Perkins, a self confessed Hermione Granger, whose one desire was to become a school teacher – at least it was until she got there and discovered why schools fail.
My Personal Slant on Education
Our ability to learn is a fundamental part of being human and yet the education system seems to struggle to find the right balance. In the UK there are thousands of amazing teachers all doing their best in a system that doesn’t work for them or the children they are teaching.
One of my heroes of the cause for education reform was the late Ken Robinson, who died last year. Throughout his life, he challenged the schooling systems both here in the UK and in the US. Whilst those in charge listen and make the right sounds, it seems that very few real changes are made.
As a past trustee for an independent school, I have to admit that I do come to this subject with a little bias. So I have posted a link to one of his YouTube videos below for you to make your own mind up on this matter.
Gemma Perkin’s Background
My conversation with today’s guest is about the joy of learning and how education is a skill that we need for life. It is also about personal development and transformation, the discovery of skills that support bonding with people, making friends and ultimately building a better world.
Gemma Perkins is the oldest of 4 siblings, whose brothers and sister are on the autistic spectrum with high functioning Asperger’s syndrome. Gemma wanted to be a teacher since her first days in primary school and as her siblings were home schooled she had plenty of opportunities to practice.
After her own days in school she would come home and practice her teaching skills on them and during school holidays she joined in with their classes by supporting their teachers as an assistant. This gave her a great start that set her on the path to teaching, but things didn’t quite turn out as expected.

Shortcast : Action Resistance
Monday Feb 07, 2022
Monday Feb 07, 2022
Are you taking action or sitting in resistance. Or worse, are you tricking yourself with non-action?
We all want to achieve things, make our goals and intentions happen and live a better life. It is easy to create vision boards and 90-day letters, but for some reason moving forward can often be tricky.
Why is it so hard to take action towards the life we say we want?
In this show, we explore that question, and you get to hear where I am at with some of this stuff.
We look at the non-action tricks that we play on ourselves. These are often actions that make us feel like we are moving forward even though we are not. We affirm why writing stuff down is non-negotiable in our quest to build the life we want. And after all that, we explore tasks and strategies to help you move out of resistance and into the life you want.

Scott Stokely : Wealthy & Homeless
Thursday Feb 03, 2022
Thursday Feb 03, 2022
I have been so looking forward to sharing this conversation with you, as my guest on the show today is a professional Frisbee player. It just makes me chuckle.
In this discussion, we discuss the gap between thought and implementation, fear and failure and the evidence that life always works out.
There are specific rules that people like to live by. One of them is that we have a place to live, somewhere to call home, sleep and keep our things. But who said that was a rule?
Could you live a nomadic life on the road traveling from city to city and living in hotels? That is the life that my guest Scott Stokely has chosen, and as you heard in the intro, he made that decision when he was 19. Now in his 50s, he jokes with me that he is probably the most well off homeless person I will ever meet.
Scott Stokely is a professional disc golf player, and when he started in the sport 30 years ago, the game was in its infancy. He left home and set out to become a professional player with no plan B. What is so unique about the conversation is that he has always jumped into things.
Scott is an entrepreneur and a good one. He always had innate confidence in himself, knowledge that it would be fine, and that is how the world works. For Scott, failure is just information and means adaptation is needed.
“I will be fine wherever I am. If I fail at something, I will just do something else and that will be fine.”
He explains how he turned his hobby into a profession and how he invented the funding model that most professional disc gold players use today. He also wrote the first book on disc golf techniques.
This is a discussion about freedom opportunity and Scott shares his business and life model that anyone could replicate.

Shortcast : What Are You Feeling
Monday Jan 31, 2022
Monday Jan 31, 2022
What are you feeling? Or should I say what are you REALLY feeling?
We all want to present ourselves as positive, up-beat and inspiring. It’s the culturally and socially desirable ‘norm’. But to truly live a happy life requires embracing the hidden and less desirable emotions in ourselves and others.
What happens when you bring fear, anger, anxiety and need out of the closet? How do you act or react when these emotions threaten to take over? What happens when you recognize them in others? Most people either react or avoid them. Sometimes they are stifled to the point that they are hardly even recognised.
This topic is inspired by a conversation between Stephen Dubner and Angela Duckworth on the ‘No Stupid Questions’ podcast that I was listening to on a recent road trip. In the episode entitled ‘Is Toxic Positivity A Thing?’ they were exploring the world of overly positive and optimistic people and brought up some interesting and thought provoking questions.
The long and short of it is that in most cases staying positive is a good thing but it requires self awareness.
So in this podcast, we are exploring this topic in greater detail, revealing what it takes to live a happy, healthy life and create the space for others to do the same.
