Over the last few weeks, I have been talking extensively on the Sunday Shortcast about stories and the importance of having a narrative for the life we want to live.

I believe that story is a fundamental part of who we are; our story gives life its meaning. But there is more; through the sharing of stories, we find resonance with others, we build community bonds and stronger friendships. However, the digital world has commoditised it and we are surrounded by stories from music, film and social media. To some extent, as humans, we have lost the art of the shared narrative.

If there is one thing that all of the top entrepreneurs have in common, it is the ability to bring people together under a shared narrative. A story of how life could be better if…

With all of that in mind, I am excited to bring you today’s guest Michael Harvey (no relation), a professional storyteller.

As you will hear in this show, his vocation found him. You will discover the difference between performance and storytelling; how a well told story creates the illusion of time stopping. Our conversation covers, his journey through myth and magic and we touch on archetypes like the ‘Hero’s Journey’. Michael also introduces us to the Mabinogion, a Welsh tale of lust and war from the middle ages.

Shortcast : What Makes You Smile?

In today’s shortcast I am asking, what happens to your face when you think about your goals and intentions? What makes you smile?

When I first moved to Scotland, I became a freelance advisor on the business network, supporting solo entrepreneurs and small business owners to get their projects moving. Over those three years I spoke to hundreds of people, offering them a combination of suggestions, encouragement and coaching.

I remember one appointment with a lady who was starting a cleaning business. She had been very efficient; she knew the kind of services she should offer and who to supply, it was a comprehensive business plan. But listening to her speak, I could see she was bored; there was no real heart in the conversation. Although she had been thorough in her planning it was clear this business was never going to put a smile on her face.

As we were rounding up the appointment, I casually asked her what else she did. She began talking about Highland Dancing. That’s when her face lit up with a big smile and a sparkle in her eyes. The transformation was startling and we continued to have an animated conversation about her life in dance. It was very clear where her passion and energy was.

Before I left, I did drop a suggestion or two in that direction. I didn’t meet her again so I don’t know how things transpired, but sincerely hope she’s following her passion and doing well.

So, the question is, what’s happening to your face now? Are you still thinking about the same goals and intentions or has this story taken you down another path all together?

What makes you smile?

Today’s guest is RJ Singh, podcast host and advocate for Ultra Habits.

Have you considered how we live within a framework? Models for behaviour might come from extended family, church or other communities. But what if, growing up, you were not given enough structure.

RJ Singh had a fend for himself childhood, and he gravitated toward trouble. As you will hear, it did not go well, but continuing the theme of this podcast, there is a story and a message.

RJ’s story is a journey through drugs, alcohol and violence. It is about finding a healthy framework to build a new life that embraces the power of mentor-ship and endurance.

Today, RJ is a father with 2 young children and a business partner in a successful logistics business. He is a podcast host for Ultra Habits podcast and he trains high-performance sales teams, using his positive habits model. He is also a sponsored endurance runner with marathon times are around 3 hours. If you know me, you’ll know I’m in awe of running ability.

Shortcast : Why Doubt Is Good

This week I am talking about why doubt is good. Yes, I do mean all those negative thoughts that come up when you are looking to change, or do something new. If you made New Year plans and have dropped them already, doubt is likely to have featured in that decision.

Doubt is a powerful killer of intentions, plans and goals than the specter of self-doubt. When we trust and believe in ourselves, our resources and resourcefulness are able to shine. So you may be wondering how it can possibly be a good thing?

Over the past few weeks, I have been discussing goals and intentions. Hopefully, you are already using the story and narrative processes I covered which offer tools to resist this problem. But, whatever the dream, we must move through self-doubt to get to these riches of achievement.

All doubt is learned behavior, and it’s there to keep us safe. That’s why it’s a good thing. It will stop you leaping over a wall without considering what is on the other side. The secret is learning to recognize doubt as a good friend there to remind you to take care and be awesome. So it’s time to unpick and release your doubtful thoughts.

Dai Manuel : Breaking Habits

When Dai Manuel first introduced himself to me, he said he was a purveyor of happiness. He certainly comes across that way now but, as with all of my guests there is a journey to be discovered.

Our conversation is about transition, it's about change, it's about living with difficult feelings and addictive behavior. We are talking about food, drink and drugs, and Dai did it all. He understands what it means to be a man seeking balance between health and connection.

For example, one of the issues many men face is how to seek connection with others without falling into unhealthy habits. For example, what do you do when the pub is where you meet your mates but alcohol addiction is a problem?

Dai is well aware of these pitfalls and opens doors for other men who face similar issues. This is the story of a man coming to terms with who he is and who he wants to be. Who knows what it takes to fully live and connect with others without pretense.

Dai has taken his life experiences and turned them into a tool to support others and models his work on five F's:

Fitness, Family, Faith, Finances and Fun.

How has 2022 started for you? Is it back into the normal routines, or is this your year to be Awesome?

In today’s Shortcast I am exploring the value of dreaming as a way to beat the January blues.

January can be the hardest month to get through. Particularly if you have enjoyed the Christmas festivities and a break from your normal routine. I guess that’s why many people set New Year resolutions. It always feels inspiring to be moving towards something positive, and getting stuck into a project often releases those feel-good chemicals.

But life’s not about doing stuff to feel happy. It’s about being happy to be doing stuff. The point is, we are here to experience life and it is our responsibility to make that life the best we can.

Time and time again it comes up in the Podcast with the final question “What is the meaning of life for you”. There are 3 common responses:-

To experience it all.
To help and support others.
To be and experience love.

On some level it all comes down to one thing. Life is about creating a worthwhile journey, something you can be proud of, something that you will be remembered for.

We take nothing with us when we go and we are remembered by the lives we have touched and the legacy we leave. So to me, being awesome is part of that and it’s important to set a plan and go for it.

Shortcast : Making 2022 Work For You

Happy New Year. Now that 2021 is over, what will this year bring your way?

The new year offers a unique transition point. It's a time when most people become reflective, looking at where they have been and where they are going. But I don't think there has been a time as strange as this in my life.

I saw this meme just after the midnight bells:

"Welcome 2022; come in, sit down and don't touch anything."

It made me smile, and I get it. The past year has been challenging for so many; so there is a lot of expectation for this new year. Have you set some goals, or are you being more cautious?

I started 2021 slowly. The pandemic I thought would be over quickly, was re-surging and it was clear we were in for a journey. In last year's 2020 review, I said be gentle and flexible with your goals, and I was not wrong.

In this reflection and review, I will give you some ideas on how to approach this year with the goals you have already set. But if you are goal resistant, I also offer something to think about that might lead to some intention and direction.

Simon Jordan : Tribute To A Friend

Simon Jordan was my first ever podcast guest, but he was also a friend and someone I admired. Our connection goes back nearly 10 years, so it was a bit of a shock when I learned that he had died just before Christmas. This podcast is a tribute to the man and his legacy:

I was first introduced to Simon when our kids were at school together and we worked remotely on some publicity for an event. At the time I saw him as the pinstripe man, a brand specialist with a YouTube channel called Simon Jordan TV. We stayed in touch through our social channels, connecting and having many great chats, on the phone or Skype.

I witnessed his transition from the suits to outdoor gear, climbing mountains and cold water swimming. The new, more genuine Simon became a bit of a hero for me. So when I started the podcast four years ago he was my first choice of guest. Simon stood for everything that Life Passion & Business is about.

The recording you are about to hear was the interview I did with Simon as part of our Reasons & Results virtual event that took place in August 2020. We called it ‘Taking Aligned Action’. I hope you enjoy my last conversation with Simon Jordan, he was an amazing man and I will miss him.

Be well my friend, it is clear that you have touched many in your short life and you clearly made a difference and contributed to so much.

Moyra Gorski : Dancing Back To life

This week I am talking to Moyra Gorski about wellness. The importance of looking after the mind the body and being open to exploring the journey.

Moyra is a fellow podcast host who, like me was guided to start her own show to share a message of hope. It was her daughter’s health issues that lead her to start sharing stories of health and recovery.

Morya Gorski is one of 4 siblings her mother said was always the peacekeeper, the relationship person the caregiver.

Growing up she was fascinated by hospital TV shows and had an interest in science. When to college to study chemistry, but on hearing about a nursing programme she signed up.

With Bachelors in nursing, she went to specialise in rehabilitation to help paraplegics and stroke patients. She did that for 8 years before leaving and going into medical sales for specialist hospital equipment.

That is where she met a future husband and left it all behind to be a full-time Mum of 4

It was the medical problems with one of her boys that lead her into a new field of wellness and prevention. She started to think differently, about nutrition the living environment and natural products. Moyra became a distributor for the company and built a business.

It is a multi-level marketing company. As a traditional marketer, I have a bias against MLM as many people get caught ( including myself) in the story and are disappointed when they do not have what it takes to live up to it.

However, The show is not about MLM so please don’t run…

Despite my prejudice, MLM can work if you do it right, you need the right personality and be willing to put in the time. It is very much about people development and a good company with clean values and a good system can change lives. Moyra landed well with the organisation and has developed a business that has served her for 20 years.

However, the personal shift came 7 years ago when her daughter was diagnosed with a life-threatening mental health disorder. She learned that she need to take care of herself first and foremost in order to show up for life, the family and her business.

Our discussion is not about MLM it is about her development, change and discovery, it is about health and wellbeing. How being open to change is freedom plus how ballroom dancing could be a metaphor for life.

Shortcast : The HappinessTrap

This week I am highlighting some of the pitfalls of the pursuit for happiness, it’s what I call the Happiness Trap. Typically this is the perpetual pursuit of external pleasures that leads us away from the true source of inner happiness that sustains us through all the ups and downs of life.

In my last Shortcast, ‘Finding Your Story’ I was talking about the requirement to have a strong vision for yourself, to have a story that you can invest in and that you are working towards. I realised afterwards that I had repeated the word Happiness a number of times on that podcast and I think it needs some qualifying.

So on this podcast, we will explore the Happiness Trap, how to avoid it and how to envision your way towards a better future without falling down that hole.

Today's conversation with Casey Grey is Part 3 of my ‘Sustainable Future Initiatives’ series. The topic is Buildings; our homes and businesses, the places we spend most of our waking hours. Which is exactly why they are so important in our efforts to reduce our reliance on carbon fuels.

We all want to live and work in comfortable spaces that are warm in winter and cool in the summer. That means heating, cooling and insulation, and just better buildings. So when I received a message from Casey Grey to say that he builds passive houses, I was excited to hook up and have a conversation.

Like any father, Casey wants to be a great role model for his children. So when it comes to sustainability, that means consciously working towards solutions in his construction business.

Shortcast : Finding Your Story

What do you want?

Are you sure, is that what your really want?

Sometimes the question is easy to answer, and the goal is easy to achieve. Other times it’s not as straightforward as you think. Answering this question with what I want now, at this moment, is relatively easy.

But what about the bigger picture. Does this short term goal set me on track for what I want for the rest of my life?

In this reflection, I am returning to the idea of narrative, finding your story and why it is so important. The point is without a story you are a leaf in the wind. You are on the train of life with no destination. You will be at the mercy of both commercial and media influences, and life may lead you where you do not want to be. It’s all about finding your desired destination and setting a course that ensures you reach it.

What lies beyond grief? At some point in life everyone dies. No matter what we do to avoid it, it's a fact. The real question is, how do we learn to live with it and how do we move on?

This week is Grief Awareness week in the UK and my guest Carole Henderson knows quite a bit about that. Not only has she learned to live with her own grief, she has discovered how to mourn well and support others to do the same.

But more importantly, as a Grief Recovery Educator and heart healer, the message she brings is that there are many forms of grief.

From the devastating and sudden loss of someone close, right down to the grief we experience when we discover the last chocolate in the box has already gone!

I have been doing a lot of research on this notion of ‘self’. For example, the sense of who I am is very much based on the narrative I tell myself about Me. In other words, the person I want to believe I am. But I have discovered that this narrative is constantly being overwritten.

Join me in this exploration of ‘self’ as we delve into some shocking experiments carried out in the 1950’s and discover what they revealed about the way we make decisions.
