Beyond Shame and Guilt with Lois Hollis
Wednesday Sep 11, 2024
Wednesday Sep 11, 2024
Following the Shortcast at the weekend, where we explored the power of Self-Talk, we touched on the issue of shame and guilt, which reminded me of my conversation with Lois Hollis, a woman in her 70s who achieved so much, yet that early trauma came back to haunt her.
It is a story of transcending the past and moving towards the future, and well worth a review.
This show was first aired in July 2022
Where are you in life with the big emotional bricks like shame and guilt? Do you reflect on past events or experience these feelings in current relationships? For most of us, this stuff is part of our makeup; we are unaware of it. Having listened to my guest on the show today, I became conscious of my shame and guilt for past actions and how I have used shame in my family interactions.
My guest on the show has always been a pioneer. Lois Hollis is in her late 70s, deeply connected to God and her faith, and driven by a calling that started in childhood. Her early years were tough. With physical abuse at home, she received multiple head and neck injuries. One of these occasions led to a near-death experience where she received her calling. At church, she was preached into guilt and shame to find her sins; the teachers at school punished her for dyslexia.
Her solace was tap dancing. She loved tap dancing, and she tells me it was tap dancing that pulled her through. It worked because she finished high school, applied to nursing school at the University of Pennsylvania, and received a scholarship.
At college, Lois earned an RN and BSN nursing degree and went on to a job at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. Her creative approach to problems was recognised, and she was invited to join a programme that went on to develop the first Kidney Hemorrhage Units in the USA in 1966.
She became a pioneer of the kidney dialysis foundation, stayed in the programme for ten years, leaving it behind to have a family, and was blessed with three daughters.
Then life took a turn. Now in her 40s, she experienced headaches that became migraine that developed into a range of other life-threatening problems. It reached a point where she was told she would not live beyond her 50s.
Those childhood traumas and physical abuse had a price it was discovered there were broken bones in her neck and back. Our conversation concerns physical, mental, and spiritual recovery and a wonderfully inspiring journey.
Today Lois Hollis works with shame and guilt as an independent study. She is bringing new knowledge of these misunderstood conditions. She is a filmmaker, author of 3 books, a speaker and a coach.

Embrace Change: The Power of Acceptance
Sunday Jun 02, 2024
Sunday Jun 02, 2024
Hey there! It's Paul Harvey, coming at you with another bite-sized episode of the Life, Passion, and Business shortcast. Today, I'm tuning in from a beautiful garden near Berwick, and I want to dive into a topic that causes so much pain – the idea of pushing water uphill or fighting unwinnable battles.
Ever found yourself raging against the world, trying to change things that just won’t budge? Trust me, I've been there and met countless others in the same boat. Sometimes, we get so caught up in resistance that we miss the opportunities for change right in front of us. It's all about attitude and acceptance.
I'll share some insights on how acceptance can open doors to new possibilities, drawing from Stephen Covey's concept of the circle of influence and concern. By shifting our perspective and embracing what's within our control, we can see real change.
Join me in this reflective chat, and let's explore how we can move from frustration to a place of grace and growth. And hey, if you find this helpful, share it with a friend – because sharing is caring and helps others find great content, too.

Graham Brown : Creating Your Story
Wednesday May 08, 2024
Wednesday May 08, 2024
This show was last released in March 2022. At the time, it was called 3 Plane Tickets and No Plans. Listening to it again, it is very much about building a life out of the narrative that we want to live.
The point is to remember that we will create that narrative consciously or unconsciously, which is why it is so important to become the driver and not the passenger.
If you want help with that check out the link here
Back to Graham and those plane tickets.
Some of us dream about dropping everything and taking off, but what happens when you do, and more to the point, what makes an entrepreneur with a growing business cash it all in, get on a plane with his family and become a nomad?
Our show is about the call to adventure.
Sometimes it takes a wake-up call to see life for what it is, “fragile”. We assume it will continue forever, and the story will play out well. In reality, we cannot make those assumptions; all we can do is live our best life by taking control of the story.
Graham Brown was a star in the telecoms industry and a leader in data research and trends. But his father's death made him ask the important questions and give it all up for three plane tickets and no plans.
As you will hear, life in paradise is not all Instagram moments.
Graham is a gentle soul that has learnt much on his travels, above all, it was the importance of finding your story.
Today Graham has produced over 1500 podcasts, written 4 books, speaks live on podcasts and helps major brands define and tell their story.
Let's join the conversation with Graham Brown.

Peace Purpose and Happiness with Maya Manseau
Wednesday Apr 17, 2024
Wednesday Apr 17, 2024
Our conversation is a healing journey about finding peace, purpose and happiness. It is a story of family values and grief, an example of a life of change and progression.
Maya Manseau grew up watching courtroom dramas and wanted to become a lawyer. Looking for the right college degree for the legal profession, a family friend advised her to get a technical degree.
She became an associate in electrical engineering in the 1980s when not many women were taking those classes. She learned a lot about how to stand her ground and tell rude jokes with the boys. By the time she left college, her legal career was forgotten.
Going into the world, her career path followed the growth of the computer industry.
Changing Values
Many years later, she was travelling the US with a successful sales career when circumstances pushed her to reevaluate her life. She needed more time for her family. Two close family members were struggling with health issues, and her teenage daughter was growing up fast, and she was missing the journey.
The time was right to make a move. She started a wedding photography business, and it flew. It did well, and her daughters joined her in the business. Together, they had nine wonderful years creatively recording the magical wedding days of couples across the US.
But in 2013, it all changed; Lindsey, her oldest daughter, developed leukaemia and died within the year, and so began the third and current iteration of Maya Manseau’s life.
Since her daughter’s passing, she has written two books “Living Intentionally After Loss: Passion and Purpose and Navigating the Small Business Path.
Peace Purpose and Happiness
Her daughter Lindsey was instrumental in Maya’s new career, which they created together in the last few months of her life.
Our conversation is about that journey and what she discovered on the way. Since then, it has become a mission to help others who are grieving some loss, to help them find themselves again, speak their truth, and turn their loss into something meaningful.

Adam Duran : Are You On Purpose
Thursday Mar 07, 2024
Thursday Mar 07, 2024
I have been mired today, trying to compress a fantastic two-hour conversation with a US Presidential Candidate. I kid you not. He is very funny and may even get a few votes come November.
Having run out of time, I am sharing this show with Adam Duran.
I mention Focus coaching and tools to get you moving on the show.

Adam Duran : Are You On Purpose
Are you on purpose? Our story today is about finding a purpose and living it because sailing the waves of life without direction or a rudder is an arduous journey.
My guest with me today is Adam Duran. He was the youngest sibling in his family and always felt like an underachiever. That failure pattern was repeated at and on into high school, where trouble became his middle name. He left without graduation, and his life was on the road to nowhere.
As always, with these stories, the universe offers a hand. During his high school years, Adam’s father rediscovered his faith and encouraged the family to attend church.
So at 18 and out of school without graduation and life looking so bleak, somehow church called him. That right, this tearaway lad was called to theological college, and he had a plan, and it was ministry.
It is fair to say that plan that did run straight, but it was an adventure. Adam built a life that his 15-year-old self never thought was possible. While at college, he met a girl, and they had a child. He got a job in law enforcement as she became a drug addict. Yes, it has all of the twists and turns of a good TV drama.
Living Life On Purpose
Our conversation is lively and passionate about how his faith was tested and how he came through the tough times. It is also about living with meaning and purpose and getting what you want. For Adam, it was always about being on purpose and focused. With hindsight, he can understand why his original plan for ministry became a 30-year career in law enforcement career. Because it was where he could be the most effective minister. It was about supporting those whose lives had begun like his but did not have the breaks that he had.
Adam is now retired from law enforcement, and he has moved into his second career as an Author, writer and speaker. He has taken his skills from ministry, law enforcement and fitness and written a book called “Live Life On Purpose.”

Scott Stonham : Lifelong Innovator
Thursday Feb 01, 2024
Thursday Feb 01, 2024
Our guest on the show is a lifelong Innovator; it was his driving passion until something changed. Innovation is that seed of possibility; it is that inspiration that takes us forward to a future that is yet to be defined.
We can all get excited by innovation and possibility, and at the same time, I have lived long enough to see the unintended consequences of our best inventions. This conversation is about motivation and wonder and how one gets lost when the passion gets distorted by money and the search for status.
It is an amazing story of an innovator. Scott Stonham is a Brit born and raised in West London, now living in Reading.
Technology was always his jam. Inspired by his uncle, who was an electrician, he tinkered and played with things to see how they worked. As a teenager, his uncle gave him a bank of switches, and he set about automating the gadgets in his room.
He was not the classic geek, being a bit of a rebel who was inspired by movies like “Back to the Future”, which led to him learning to Skateboard—the Karate Kid, which led to martial arts and finally, the Terminator. Which lead to a university degree in Cybernetics.
Upon leaving University, there was no cybernetics industry to join, so Scott went into software engineering and later got a job on Vodaphone.
Scott Stonham is a lifelong innovator.
This podcast is a fascinating exploration of innovation and the development of mobile applications in the late 90s at a time when there was no need for them. They were creating the business use and the market for the technology they were developing.
Our guest, Scott Stonham, has helped bring to life many of the innovations that we take for granted, from the Mobile Internet to Smartphone Navigation. Over the last 25 years he had senior technology and marketing roles for multi-nationals, including Vodafone, Qualcomm and edgy technology start-ups in the UK, Europe and the USA.
Today, Scott focuses his energy on driving positive impacts for people, nature and the planet. He is driven by the UN sustainable development goals and channels his work through two ventures:
Leading an accelerator for Impact Startups and helping companies understand and address their digital carbon footprints.
Scott is an advisor, speaker, and author of the Exploring Digital Carbon Footprints report, a contributor to the Open University and the founder of Digital Carbon Online.

Dr Heather Browne : Trauma and Self-Love
Thursday Sep 28, 2023
Thursday Sep 28, 2023
Our conversation is about trauma and self-love; it is an extraordinary journey of survival and learning to love and heal herself.
Heather Browne had an odd but wonder-filled childhood. It was beautiful, creative and magical. When your coat is a polar bear that will keep you warm, it is both disturbing and incredible. She had no idea that her mother’s stories, creativity, and pretending to be different people came from schizophrenia. Or that it was unusual until that day her mother became Judy, the Babysitter while they were in the laundromat.
She was eight years old when life took a turn and suddenly not so wonderful. Heather witnessed and experienced abuse, trauma, alcoholism, and finally abandonment as she was disowned. leaving her dysfunctional family at 17, she went to New York and put herself through college.
While life had been tough, she had learned how to survive, function and act as if everything was normal. But on the inside, she was hollow out and unloved. She did a lot of churches and temples, looking for God, meaning and who she was.
Acting was her first choice of career, but she was guided to move away and help other people; it led her to train as a psychotherapist, and as she read the books to learn, she realised that she was the book.
“The only person you truly have is you; how do you love and take care of yourself.”
It is a story of trauma and self-love, learning to be loved and rebuilding and helping others do the same.
Over her 27-year career, Heather has worked with thousands of individuals and couples in psychotherapy. She has been published in hundreds of journals, has an active YouTube channel, has been featured on TV and media, and, as of last weekend, she is a TEDx speaker.
“We get one shot at being this human. Let’s make sure it is worth it.”

Shortcast : Transitions and Assimilation
Sunday Jul 02, 2023
Sunday Jul 02, 2023
Let’s talk about transitions and assimilation, that is the integration of all that we are and bringing it to the world as a contribution.
In the podcast we are looking at transition and assimilation as part of our right of passage. The show is about how the move from 50s in to my 60s has been more than a birthday.
We return briefly to my ultra marathon experience and what I have leant from that journey.
I can do hard things, and the pain passes and there is much more
There is also the ritual I used to pass from 59 to 60 years old. How I ran thought the time of my birth 60 years back.
A week of Transitions and Assimilation
In truth I have been preparing for this turning 60 as a transition. I’ve been talking about it for a while in my podcast and in someone my posts. Some of that conversation is ongoing, as my wife is currently in training to become an interfaith minister. Our conversations often revolve around transitions and connecting with all that is that’s probably led me to this place.
In the first world, we have lost touch with what it means to pass from one stage to the next. To honour and celebrate that transition. In the modern world we have lost touch with so much that makes living life expansive.
Most people see their success or contribution to the world as part of their career. There is so much focus on this idea that the career is where you shine.
Ultimately this is about learning to shine all of the time. It is about feeling confident in your skin and body. And seeing that your strengths and weaknesses are an equal part of who you are
There are some things where I am crap. I’ve never been particularly organised, I am dyslexic on many levels and have a terrible memory for names. There are more…
But I own those things. I don’t let my dyslexia stop me writing or publishing on social media. If there are errors and things that are wrong in something and someone doesn’t like it well that’s their problem not mine. And that is OK. That is not to say those errors don’t hurt becasue they do.
How Does My Journey Help You?
Remember as I say this all the time it’s your story. It has to be written, we have to create our own story. Mine is about the podcast. It is about the expansion of me and the expansion of people around me, it’s about how do we live a good life. What are the tools required for that. How can I help people find those tools and move forward. This is what it’s about for me, that is the exciting part of who I am and where I am at this time.
I will embrace the fear and keep looking to expand through it.
What would be a right of passage for you at your age and stage?
I have said before, “The Prize” is on the other side.
So I urge you to seek out an enduring adventure and push against something that offers resistance. Something that makes you grow and feels like an achievement, it does not need to be a full-on physical challenge.
I am biased, as I think something enduringly physical is hard to beat.
But there are other options. My wife for example is physically challenged for her the challenge is about writing and making it public.
I believe she is very good check out the website https://simplibee.uk/ it is beautful.

Jeannine Kim : Finance to Mystic
Wednesday Jun 14, 2023
Wednesday Jun 14, 2023
Finance to Mystic, how does the move from a life of facts to a life of intuition happen? Our story in the podcast is of transition from the rough and tumble world of finance to healing wisdom and soul work.
On this show, you will discover the importance of sacred clearing, we all clean our physical bodies, but there is more to life than this physical plain.
A 70s Child, free to explore the world
Jammine Kim was an adopted child with red hair and a firebrand personality. She had a wonderful early life in 1970 Chicago. Life was different; for Jeannine, childhood was an experience outside of the house, it was a freedom to explore. As a sensitive child, the world was full of seen and unseen experiences.
She left home at 17 and threw herself at the world, gravitating towards money and finance. Without a college qualification worked her way up from the bottom to become an IPO trader.
In the 1990s, finance was still running on a wall street mentality where greed is good, and women in the industry were commodities.
She was among the first women in the 90s to pursue and win a sexual harassment lawsuit and challenge this behaviour.
That firebrand personality served her well; she was good at the job, trained others and built teams. But life while rich was empty on the inside.
There was a calling back to that sensitive child running wild in Chicago. She found a path through yoga. That was the start of her journey towards healing and the drive to share it with others.
She signed up for healing training in China, meaning she would need to leave her job to make it possible. She would have to choose to release her income, security and health insurance benefits.
The Journey from finance to mystic
The universe has other plans. Our story is that journey and how the universe always has a hand in the process.
Twenty-three years later, she is now a yoga teacher and author, helping thousands of people to reconnect with their guidance and wisdom.

Words for a good life
Wednesday May 31, 2023
Wednesday May 31, 2023
Words for a good life. The power of words to move us should never be underestimated. I finally sat down with my wife to plan my funeral this week, and wow, what an adventure. Talking this through with my wife was strangle liberating. I have never felt so loved.
The show is not about my funeral but my relationship with a piece of text I first discovered in my late 20s. Do you have a special poem or piece of writing that moves you?
Ok to put the record straight I have no intention of shuffling off just yet, but preparation is everything and leaving a document for my family to follow does give them something to use or build on once I have passed.
A bit if context my wife is training to be an interfaith minister and she had to complete a funeral assignment, and it was decided with my agreement that I would be a good candidate for her.
Personally I think It made it a more challenging exercise, in our conversation we looked at the practical process or getting rid of my body. We have found a beautiful green burial ground. Burning my body will release far too much carbon.
The moving part of the exercise was music and words.
I suddenly remembered. Desiderata

Desiderata:
This is the original text from the book where Desiderata was first published.
Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Billy Lahr More Mindful Travelling

Wednesday May 17, 2023
Here is part 2 of my conversation with the mindful traveller Billy Lahr, in last weeks episode, we explored his journey.
On the show, we get to see how Billy is exploring his transition and what it mean to put yourself out there and ask for feedback.
Now we get to her how he is putting it all together. As I said on last week's show, there is no conclusion it is Billy’s story and the journey continues.
We will explore the mindful journey and how we can become conscious and live in each moment. The modern world does not support us at best; there is always a call on out attention and busy stuff to keep us distracted.
To recap part one of our show.
Billy Lahr is from from Minnesota he grew up on a farm with no interest in farming. At college, he followed the idea of becoming a computer programmer and, by accident, gravitated toward teaching.
He lived a normal life working in education for 21 years, he became the dean of students. If you are not aware, they are the butt of the joke in every teen movie and are universally disliked by the students.
To be fair, it is a role of service meeting the needs of the students, but when the deen gets involved, it is because there is a problem.
For a people person working in a conflict role, it was difficult. He did the job for six years before becoming disenfranchised from budding mental health concerns and lacking job satisfaction. So he made a huge decision to give it all up to travel while developing a mindfulness practice.
Billy has been hopping countries since 2021, and our conversation about that journey of self-discovery. He has travelled extensively in Asia to countries where he knows no one and does not speak the language.
There is no big finale ending to this conversation, as the question is still ongoing. There have been highs and lows, and he is still to answer the question does he continue his travels or go back to the States and return to teaching?
