Carole Henderson : Beyond Grief Reprise
Wednesday Sep 14, 2022
Wednesday Sep 14, 2022
Beyond Grief Reprise. I am taking a break this week, so thought to reprise an episode from last year that seems relevant.
With Queen Elizabeth passing last week, many people are experiencing grief that they were not expecting. How does that work? Hence the reprise of my conversation Beyond Grief with Carol Henderson.
The conversation with Carol explores why we grieve and will shed some light on what people are feeling. I have not had any reaction to the queen's passing, but I have had a reaction to my son returning to University. It is exciting, its progress and opportunity for him and it has a bittersweet taste for me. Grief is everywhere.
I hope you find my conversation with Carol Henderson useful.
Carol Henderson Beyond Grief Reprise
What lies beyond grief? At some point in life, everyone dies. No matter what we do to avoid it, it's a fact. The real question is, how do we learn to live with it and how do we move on?
My guest Carole Henderson has had her journey with grief. Not only has she learned to live with it, but she has also discovered how to mourn well and support others to do the same.
But more importantly, as a Grief Recovery Educator and heart healer, the message she brings is that there are many forms of grief. From the devastating and sudden loss of someone close, right down to the grief we experience when we discover the last chocolate in the box has already gone!
No matter who you are, at some point you will have faced grief in some form or other. Join me for this educational journey about what it truly means to live well beyond grief.

Steve Cook : Squeezing The Sponge
Thursday Jul 28, 2022
Thursday Jul 28, 2022
Our conversation is a little different this week as this story has no fall, crash or upheaval. However, it is about good communication and the search for meaning and purpose.
My guest is unusual in that he is younger than most. What makes him interesting is he is the third generation of a thriving family business. The transition between father and son was without drama.
Steve Cook was born in Oklahoma and has never left.
As a child, Steve mirrored his dad and wanted to be like him. As he went to college, his Dad became a restauranter, and steve followed that interest in his studies.
By the time Steve was leaving college, the family had sold the restaurant and bought into the family horse feed business.
On stepping out into the world of work, Steve considered various careers before entering the family business. There is a lot of potential baggage when it comes to working with family.
Our conversation is about his journey into the business, finding his feet up to the point where he took it over. The company is one of the largest feed suppliers in the USA, which is due to the successful working relationship between Steve and his father.
We take about his challenges and, of course, the usual five questions.
Steve did not say he was passionate about horse feed, but he is passionate about business and what it takes to run it well.
That is how we met as steve is the host of the Better Business Podcast and squeezing the sponge is his view on getting the most out of life.

Shortcast : Family Stories
Sunday Jul 03, 2022
Sunday Jul 03, 2022
Are you having important conversations? Are there elephants in the room?
I was privileged to be part of my wife's family reunion last week. My mother-in-law is 82 and in good health; however, it could be the last time she will see her son, who was over from the US.
We all had great conversations; they retold the best family stories and went to some of the dark places that most people avoid. It was a privilege to be a witness to the conversations; it was something that would not have happened in my family.
My conversation is not about revelling skeletons in the cupboard as there were none. But it is about having difficult conversations from a place of love and not blaming, shaming or guilt trips.
We are all a product of our historical experiences and the stories that we tell ourselves. We cannot change the past but can only seek or give forgiveness.

Carole Brody Fleet : Widows Wear Stilettos
Wednesday May 25, 2022
Wednesday May 25, 2022
Life and death are beyond our control, but we can change our reactions. My guess on the show today is here with a story of loss grief and recovery. She is an international speaker with four books to her name.
Carole Brody Fleet lives in Southern California and started her career in the legal profession. She met a fantastic man, a Vietnam vet and a serving police officer. They had a daughter, and life was good.
After 15 years in the legal profession, the hours were not compatible with family life, so Carole moved into a senior position within the beauty and cosmetic industry.
In the late 90s, Mike was diagnosed with motor neuron disease, an illness that was brought to prominence by the late Stephen Hawkin. He lived with the disease for years, however, Carole's husband Mike had a more aggressive form and degenerated quickly, dying within two years.
Unlike most of my guests, asking questions about passion and success is not so easy when the journey is not a choice. But this story is about rebuilding a life, at a time when most of the resources for grief were unhelpful. It was a time before the internet and social media the resources were not there to find the support she needed..
Carole’s had five years of widowhood and found a route to the point where she was inspired to write. What started as notes on a legal pad became the best selling book and the beginning of a new career.
The book “Widows in Stilettos” is a chronological manual to help women out of grief, it helps them to find a new story for their life. It has been republished for its second edition. That is a testament to its success.
Carole’s mission her why is is to help those through loss and bereavement, in the process, she has created a community of supportive women around her.
Today Carole is an accomplished writer, with four books, she is a regular contributor to Chicken Soup of the soul, the Huffington Post. She is a speaker appearing on stage Radio, TV and on podcasts like ours.

Paula Telizyn A Near-Death Decision
Wednesday May 18, 2022
Wednesday May 18, 2022
Are you living to your full potential or cruising a path well-trodden? What if you had a moment, a close shave. A point where you could live or die. Would it change you?
Most of us live life as if it will go on forever, and for the majority of us, we get to experience 29500 days, letting them pass without much thought. I did a shortcast about that last year.
However, those life-changing moments bring it all into focus and make us reevaluate where we are.
The wake-up call can arrive at any time. For my guest on this show, it was staring at oncoming headlights and nowhere to go.
That near-fatal experience on the freeway started a chain of events; it was the moment that changed the direction of her life forever.
Paula had started a tech company in the early 90s, building websites, the first e-commerce sites in 1997 and the software for some of the first eBook readers.
Paula Telizyn could be the grandmother of the internet.
Despite all of this success, Paula was not happy. As someone with a mild form of ADHD, she was prone to overworking. She was running a full-time business, mothering three children, and the wonderful man she had married was now an out of work alcoholic with a tendency to violence.
The near-death experience was the wake-up call to look at her life and make some changes.
Our conversation is about the journey through a midlife crisis and out the other side. We talk about success, failure and relationships.

Lisa Evans : The Story Midwife
Wednesday May 11, 2022
Wednesday May 11, 2022
We often define ourselves by the career, it is our story of what we do in the world, when it is taken away we are forced to reinvent ourselves.
Lisa Evans was drawn to nursing at 17 years old; She qualified and trained as a midwife and specialised in neonatal care.
Nursing is an international career and opens so many travel opportunities. She set out on her travels to Australia in 1988, met an English man in 1990, married in 91, and they settled in Perth, Western Australia. In her words, they became grown-ups, settled, and had three children.
It is a lovely story of travel adventures, finding a career and settling into family life. But then as life does, the universe delivers a change.
A virus destroyed all of the nerves in her vestibular system, which means balance and hearing. The door to her nursing career closed, and now in her 40s, she had to find a new job and new meaning for her life.
Our conversation is about Lisa's journey into becoming the storytelling midwife and starting a new business and career at the age of 50.

Doug Crowe : Making A Dent In The Universe
Wednesday Mar 30, 2022
Wednesday Mar 30, 2022
My guest on the show is Doug Crowe, an adventurer, not in the sense of endurance but in his desire and hunger for life experience. He has traveled to 42 countries and done all 7 continents. He learnt to fly planes and enjoys scuba diving, speaking and writing.
Life is a journey of discovery and we all have a path to find and follow, some of us struggle to find one and others, like Doug are hungry to discover them all.
As a child of the 60’s he wanted to be an astronaut (didn’t we all?). He looked at becoming a commercial pilot, but his eyesight had other plans. So instead, he went to college and got a degree in media and TV and went into the industry.
While earning $3/hr as the lighting director on a TV show he heard a guest interview with Robert Allan about no money investing. He didn’t have the money for the $5K weekend boot camp but could afford to buy the book. It changed his life. He followed the book, took action and made more money in his first deal than he had in his job for the whole year. The secret was always to buy with a profit.
“You don’t make money when you sell you make money when you buy”
He went on to develop a successful real estate business and a training company teaching others to do the same. That lead to one of the first real estate radio shows and lots of speaking gigs. The 2009 financial crash took it all.
“I had 19 foreclosures and went from being a millionaire
to $54 and living in the basement of a foreclosed home.”
Our story is about that rebirth and rediscovery of identity, who we are and why we do what we do.
“We die naked and broke just as we came in.”
Today Doug is back in the driving seat of his life through publishing, he is an investor, brand specialist, and an accomplished writer. He and his team support CEOs and business owners to tell their stories by ghostwriting books that sell.

Neil Seligman : Conscious Transformation
Wednesday Mar 16, 2022
Wednesday Mar 16, 2022
What happens when life delivers a message so loud, so clear that you have no choice but to take heed?
It is rare to get a message that clear, and to some extent, you need to be open to hearing it.
My guest on the show is Neil Seligman, A mindfulness coach, author and public speaker. But as you heard in the intro, he had a sudden realization that the career he had chosen was the wrong place for his star to rise.
Getting on in the legal profession is a long road; in Neil's case, it was five years of study and eight years in practice as a Civil Law Barrister. For those not familiar with the British legal system, that means he gets to wear a wig and black gown. Giving it all up to be a Mindfulness Practitioner before that word had any meaning was a big step into the unknown.
As a young man, Neil was academic; it came easy to him. At university, he loved acting, sports and living life. But he was shepherded into the legal profession as it was more lucrative than acting and very similar, (say I, with a smile on my face).
But as I mentioned before, you must be open to change to hear the message and Neil was not a stranger to the alternative sector. He discovered Reiki healing in his teens and went on to become a Reiki master way before he was a barrister. So he was already bridging two worlds when he heard the message and decided to leave.
But changing from what is seen to be a solid career does raise questions. He had to confront all the preconceptions from family and friends, as well as his own thoughts and feelings around money, identity and meaning.
In our conversation, we explore Neil's journey and the soul searching he went through to find his path. Join me for this conversation with Neil Seligman.

Jane Taylor: - Mom, Biker, Warrior
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
Is there an 'unlived' adventure story lurking somewhere inside of you?
Lets face it, we all love a good adventure story. yet for most of us the fix generally comes through reading fiction or biographies, watching movies, or listening to podcasts and celebrating the hero's journey in somebody else. But what if it were your turn? What would you choose, and given the opportunity, would you actually say yes?
Today, not only do we get to hear Jane Taylor's story, we also get the opportunity to be part of her adventure. (details below).
When Jane Taylor's son Emmit graduated, her husband John had the idea to celebrate with a road trip. The plan was to buy three motorcycles and ride across country from Vermont to California and back. That is a 10,000 mile round trip, and for a Mom who hadn't been on a motorbike for 40 years, that's no small challenge!
Jane said Yes to the idea, even though she was terrified!
“I jumped in, because I tend to lead, but I was terrified.”
Motorcycles were in her family's blood when Jane was a child. In 6th-grade, her mother owned a motorcycle business, so her early years were around bikes and bikers. But her family sold the business and moved on, and riding a motorbike was now just a distant memory. In her teen years, writing was her thing; she went to college earned her degree in literature and music history and always knew writing would be part of her life, but not sure how.
On leaving college Jane skirted around, working in restaurants, cooking for a Baroque orchestra running a welding shop, and being an event organizer. But it was always writing that held her interest, so she eventually became a freelance 'pen for hire' and a professional CV writer.
But, at 50 years, old approaching mid-life, it was this family adventure that changed everything. The podcast is part of a celebration of that journey and the launch of her book “Spirit Traffic – A Mother's Journey of Letting Go” inspired by her travels and the gifts it gave her.
The book is out on April 19th 2022, and there is a book tour beginning in May. The fun part is that Jane and her husband John are reprising the adventure by travelling across the US, from New England to California, for readings at independent books shops and in people's homes.
So you can be part of the tour by hosting an event. All the details are here:-

Shortcast : Believing the Story
Sunday Mar 06, 2022
Sunday Mar 06, 2022
In today's show, we're going to explore why it's so critical to believe in your story and what happens if it runs out.
Last week would have been the 95th birthday of my father, so it seems fitting to explore his story and how I came to create the podcast through that journey.
Life is unpredictable, and when things feel uncertain, we look with hope for a better future. How we develop that hope into reality is by creating a vision or story where we achieve the goal or desired outcome.
Having a strong narrative and believing in that narrative, enables us to be resilient in the face of challenges and change. The problem, of course, is that life doesn't always manifest the picture we have been holding in our minds eye.
With the current situation, still dealing with COVID and now facing the prospects dealing with international conflicts, there's a lot of uncertainty around that threatens our internal peace of mind.
If you are struggling with your narrative or setting goals, join me in exploring some ways to re-discover the dreams and aspirations you might have left behind.

Shortcast : Commitment & Sacrifice
Sunday Feb 13, 2022
Sunday Feb 13, 2022
Today’s shortcast explores the relationship between sacrifice and commitment to goals, and how to avoid the pitfalls and dangers that this union brings.
Be it work, home, relationships or possessions we all make commitments in some form or other. The greater the goal or desire, the more we are likely to sacrifice to achieve or maintain it. These sacrifices usually put a strain on time, energy, finances or health, but what happens when the price becomes too high.
For as long as we can remember humans have made sacrifices in return for the promise of something better. Why is it we are prepared to do this?
Early in human existence, it would most likely have been connected to some sort of religious rituals or rites of passage, often in some form of payment to a deity in return for good fortune and may have included the sacrifice of a highly priced animal, a companion or even a child.
Thankfully we have mostly moved away from the blood sacrifice of a loved one, but we have not given up the idea of commitment and obligations in return for the hope of something better.
When the sacrifices made have become all-consuming or unhealthy, at what point do we make the decision that enough is enough?

Gemma Perkins : Where Schools Fail
Wednesday Feb 09, 2022
Wednesday Feb 09, 2022
This week I am talking to Gemma Perkins, a self confessed Hermione Granger, whose one desire was to become a school teacher – at least it was until she got there and discovered why schools fail.
My Personal Slant on Education
Our ability to learn is a fundamental part of being human and yet the education system seems to struggle to find the right balance. In the UK there are thousands of amazing teachers all doing their best in a system that doesn’t work for them or the children they are teaching.
One of my heroes of the cause for education reform was the late Ken Robinson, who died last year. Throughout his life, he challenged the schooling systems both here in the UK and in the US. Whilst those in charge listen and make the right sounds, it seems that very few real changes are made.
As a past trustee for an independent school, I have to admit that I do come to this subject with a little bias. So I have posted a link to one of his YouTube videos below for you to make your own mind up on this matter.
Gemma Perkin’s Background
My conversation with today’s guest is about the joy of learning and how education is a skill that we need for life. It is also about personal development and transformation, the discovery of skills that support bonding with people, making friends and ultimately building a better world.
Gemma Perkins is the oldest of 4 siblings, whose brothers and sister are on the autistic spectrum with high functioning Asperger’s syndrome. Gemma wanted to be a teacher since her first days in primary school and as her siblings were home schooled she had plenty of opportunities to practice.
After her own days in school she would come home and practice her teaching skills on them and during school holidays she joined in with their classes by supporting their teachers as an assistant. This gave her a great start that set her on the path to teaching, but things didn’t quite turn out as expected.

Scott Stokely : Wealthy & Homeless
Thursday Feb 03, 2022
Thursday Feb 03, 2022
I have been so looking forward to sharing this conversation with you, as my guest on the show today is a professional Frisbee player. It just makes me chuckle.
In this discussion, we discuss the gap between thought and implementation, fear and failure and the evidence that life always works out.
There are specific rules that people like to live by. One of them is that we have a place to live, somewhere to call home, sleep and keep our things. But who said that was a rule?
Could you live a nomadic life on the road traveling from city to city and living in hotels? That is the life that my guest Scott Stokely has chosen, and as you heard in the intro, he made that decision when he was 19. Now in his 50s, he jokes with me that he is probably the most well off homeless person I will ever meet.
Scott Stokely is a professional disc golf player, and when he started in the sport 30 years ago, the game was in its infancy. He left home and set out to become a professional player with no plan B. What is so unique about the conversation is that he has always jumped into things.
Scott is an entrepreneur and a good one. He always had innate confidence in himself, knowledge that it would be fine, and that is how the world works. For Scott, failure is just information and means adaptation is needed.
“I will be fine wherever I am. If I fail at something, I will just do something else and that will be fine.”
He explains how he turned his hobby into a profession and how he invented the funding model that most professional disc gold players use today. He also wrote the first book on disc golf techniques.
This is a discussion about freedom opportunity and Scott shares his business and life model that anyone could replicate.

Dai Manuel : Breaking Habits

Wednesday Jan 12, 2022
When Dai Manuel first introduced himself to me, he said he was a purveyor of happiness. He certainly comes across that way now but, as with all of my guests there is a journey to be discovered.
Our conversation is about transition, it's about change, it's about living with difficult feelings and addictive behavior. We are talking about food, drink and drugs, and Dai did it all. He understands what it means to be a man seeking balance between health and connection.
For example, one of the issues many men face is how to seek connection with others without falling into unhealthy habits. For example, what do you do when the pub is where you meet your mates but alcohol addiction is a problem?
Dai is well aware of these pitfalls and opens doors for other men who face similar issues. This is the story of a man coming to terms with who he is and who he wants to be. Who knows what it takes to fully live and connect with others without pretense.
Dai has taken his life experiences and turned them into a tool to support others and models his work on five F's:
Fitness, Family, Faith, Finances and Fun.
I hope you enjoy this conversation with Dai Manuel.
