Scott Stokely: Between Thought and Implementation
Wednesday Mar 13, 2024
Wednesday Mar 13, 2024
I have been so looking forward to sharing this conversation with you, as my guest on the show today is a professional Frisbee player. It just makes me chuckle.
In this show we discuss the gap between thought and implementation, fear and failure and the evidence that life always works out.
People like to live by specific rules. One of them is that we have a place to live, somewhere to call home, sleep, and store our things. But who said that was a rule?
Could you live a nomadic life on the road, travelling from city to city and living in hotels? That is the life that my guest, Scott Stokely, has chosen. As you heard in the intro, he made that decision when he was 19. Now in his 50s, he jokes with me that he is probably the most well-off homeless person I will ever meet.
Scott Stokely is a professional disc golf player. When he started in the sport 30 years ago, it was in its infancy. He left home and set out to become a professional player with no plan B. The conversation is so unique because he has always jumped into things.
Scott is an entrepreneur—and a good one. He has always had innate confidence in himself and the knowledge that it would be fine, and that is how the world works. For Scott, failure is just information and means adaptation is needed.
“I will be fine wherever I am. If I fail at something, I will just do something else and that will be fine.”
He explains how he turned his hobby into a profession and invented the funding model that most professional disc golfers use today. He also wrote the first book on disc golf techniques.
This is a discussion about freedom opportunity, and Scott shares his business and life model that anyone could replicate.

Experience an enlightening and thought-provoking dialogue that explores our daily struggles in decision-making, from the seemingly simple, like suffering from menu anxiety at a restaurant, to the more complex decisions that shape our lives.

In an age of infinite choices, Paul takes a reflective journey, exploring the importance of committing to decisions, understanding the consequences, and navigating the anxieties associated with this process. The podcast addresses the various factors that influence our decision-making abilities, including past experiences, a desire to please, and fear.

Discover how high achievers manage their decisions and how a simple act of consistency, like wearing the same clothes, can ease decision fatigue. I have been mired today, trying to compress a fantastic two-hour conversation with a US Presidential Candidate. I kid you not. He is very funny and may even get a few votes come November.
Having run out of time, I am sharing this show with Adam Duran.
I mention Focus coaching and tools to get you moving on the show.

Adam Duran : Are You On Purpose
Are you on purpose? Our story today is about finding a purpose and living it because sailing the waves of life without direction or a rudder is an arduous journey.
My guest with me today is Adam Duran. He was the youngest sibling in his family and always felt like an underachiever. That failure pattern was repeated at and on into high school, where trouble became his middle name. He left without graduation, and his life was on the road to nowhere.
As always, with these stories, the universe offers a hand. During his high school years, Adam’s father rediscovered his faith and encouraged the family to attend church.
So at 18 and out of school without graduation and life looking so bleak, somehow church called him. That right, this tearaway lad was called to theological college, and he had a plan, and it was ministry.
It is fair to say that plan that did run straight, but it was an adventure. Adam built a life that his 15-year-old self never thought was possible. While at college, he met a girl, and they had a child. He got a job in law enforcement as she became a drug addict. Yes, it has all of the twists and turns of a good TV drama.
Living Life On Purpose
Our conversation is lively and passionate about how his faith was tested and how he came through the tough times. It is also about living with meaning and purpose and getting what you want. For Adam, it was always about being on purpose and focused. With hindsight, he can understand why his original plan for ministry became a 30-year career in law enforcement career. Because it was where he could be the most effective minister. It was about supporting those whose lives had begun like his but did not have the breaks that he had.
Adam is now retired from law enforcement, and he has moved into his second career as an Author, writer and speaker. He has taken his skills from ministry, law enforcement and fitness and written a book called “Live Life On Purpose.”

Shortcast : Reaction or Response
Sunday Mar 03, 2024
Sunday Mar 03, 2024
Reaction or response: I opened the car door, and the harsh words were out of my mouth before I knew it. His response was just as intense as mine. Did I get out of the car?
On this show, we are talking about reaction or response. The course of life is a flow with ups and downs, situations, problems, and solutions. Now, we can live, breathe and move with the flow or fight against it.
But, of course, that is more challenging than it sounds. Living with ease and flow takes some practice, but if we can respond with clear, fresh thinking, love, compassion and ease. The depth of any problem with an emotional charge is significantly reduced.
So, how do you react to life’s ups and downs? Do you give a measured response, or do you react, and how deep is that reaction measured, or do you go full nuclear?
There are people in life with short fuses; thankfully, I don’t meet so many of them these days.
The situation above was an overreaction of mine in a petrol station to a driver who had pushed into the queue for fuel. It was not my finest hour, that’s for sure. Had it not been for my wife’s calming words and touch, I may have got out of the car, and life may have taken a different turn.
Do You React or Respond
In this show, we look at the reaction or response and how we might choose a response over a reaction. We also consider the impact of reaction in other areas like social media. Out of interest, have you ever had a change of mind or opinion following a tense interaction on a social media post?
That is the point: reaction might win the battle but rarely changes minds.

Roberto Capodieci : Software Pirate to Blockchain Innovation
Wednesday Feb 28, 2024
Wednesday Feb 28, 2024
Innovation and entrepreneurship have been the themes of Roberto’s life. He has always been fascinated by cutting-edge of technology.
Roberto Capodieci was born in Italy near Venice and was a natural entrepreneur from age 5, making and selling stuff to buy more toys.
Elementary school bored him, so he dropped out he never went back, taking charge of his education and studying everything from business management to computer programming.
He did not attend college officially, although he sneaked into lectures that interested him.
At age ten, he started a computer and electronics club. It became a business when he was 14—he started as a software house selling thousands of pirated computer games. At the time, there was no law to prevent it. With so many callers to the house and so much cash, his parents thought he was selling drugs. While not true, it created a reputation that led to a surprising opportunity with law enforcement.
The business moved from pirated software to optical archiving of documents using the first Apple computers.
The credibility of age
By the time he was 19, he was the head of a large company employing 50 people. He had to employ older people to get the credibility of age. As one so young, he would pretend to be the janitor cleaning the floor so he could listen to his salespeople negotiate the deal.
Our conversation is rich in stories as he has worked in many countries commercially and as technical support in law enforcement environments. He even knocked on the door of the FBI and asked if he could help.
Roberto has 40 years of business behind him. It has always been about technology and innovation, so unsurprisingly, he has been instrumental in laying down the foundational aspects of blockchain applications, ensuring their relevance and applicability in various sectors.
Innovation and Blockchain
His contributions extend beyond the technical aspects, as he actively educates others, sharing his knowledge through speaking engagements, publications, and mentorship.
On this show, we glimpse what is possible with decentralization and how it could protect everything from the food on your plate to life-saving medicine.
Interestingly, he started his business on pirated software, and today, as an advocate of blockchain, he is at the forefront of preventing Piracy.

Wednesday Feb 21, 2024
I am on a project for next week, so I thought I would reshare this episode from January 2022 with Michael Harvey, a storyteller. His journey into the profession is interesting, but more than that, our conversation is about the fundamental need for stories in our lives.
On the show, I mention Focus coaching and tools to get you moving.

Michael Harvey : Story Myth and Magic
I believe that story is a fundamental part of who we are; our story gives life its meaning. But there is more; through sharing stories, we find resonance with others, and we build community bonds and stronger friendships. However, the digital world has commoditised it, and stories from music, film and social media surround us. To some extent, we have lost the art of the shared narrative.
If there is one thing that all of the top entrepreneurs have in common, it is the ability to bring people together under a shared narrative. A story of how life could be better if…
With all of that in mind, I am excited to bring you today’s guest, Michael Harvey (no relation), a professional storyteller.
As you will hear in this show, his vocation found him. You will discover the difference between performance and storytelling: how a well-told story creates the illusion of time stopping. Our conversation covers his journey through myth and magic, and we touch on archetypes like the ‘Hero’s Journey’. Michael also introduces us to the Mabinogion, a Welsh tale of lust and war from the Middle Ages.

Shortcast : Empathic Distress
Sunday Feb 18, 2024
Sunday Feb 18, 2024
Emphatic distress, what does that mean? It was a new phrase for me. It is the term that describes the overwhelm that so many people in modern life experience.
We were never meant to be this connected to world events and things where we have zero power of influence. I have to thank the universe for the article in the Guardian newspaper by Nadine Levy that explored the topic.
I got here because there has been a theme this week. I have been working with several people who were struggling with focus. But they found it impossible to stick to the main topic at hand and looked to see if it was possible to eat the whole elephant.
This podcast discusses the impact of working towards a big goal and how empathic distress can detract from the task at hand.
We are considering some options you might use to move through it. It is about breaking the pattern; that is breathing, a big, deep belly breath.
Other options are to set a low bar, forgiveness and kindness. If any of these topics touch you and you need support, reach out and find it because you are not alone.
These powerful tools are part of the kit in focus coaching. If you have a project or something that you want to change or are finding some resistance check out this video.

Rocky Lalvani : Take the first step now
Are you setting your course, are you taking that first step?
My guest on the show is an example of someone living a good life by design a man who came from humble beginnings.
Rocky Lalvani was born in India, when he was two years old, the family emigrated to the US, and while it was a great opportunity, the family had to start at the bottom.
It was a tough beginning, but they worked hard as immigrant families do, the American dream inspired them, and they built their wealth.
During Rocky’s early life, there were lots of success and money conversations with other ex-pat communities. While listening to these family chats, he learned the importance of negotiation and how to hustle.
Starting with his paper route, he discovers how good service leads to good tips. At college, he was buying and selling stuff until he secured a real-estate licence to sell properties.
After finishing high school and going to college, he did a degree in Economics and went out into the world to work.
He did many jobs and eventually built a solid business creating operational and management spreadsheets for small businesses.
Rocky’s challenge was that he found it almost impossible to take the first steps and move his life forward. Our conversation is not about the work he did but the wisdom he developed. We touch on mentors, health, fitness, food and more. All of the steps that help him move forward and build the life he wanted.
Today Rocky calls himself the Chief Profitability Adviser for business owners. He teaches them how to ensure they get paid and that they make pro

Shortcast : Finding Focus
Sunday Feb 11, 2024
Sunday Feb 11, 2024
Finding focus is the key to getting stuff done. But how do we do that in a society that has created a distracted industry? Because your phones have given you instant access to everything, and we live in a 24/7 society.
It has never been so difficult to isolate ourselves from those things that would have us blow off and fritter our time. In this podcast, we explore the problem and offer some solutions to that could see you getting stuff done.
Finding Focus is not easy.
Why is that? It is because our media is cultivating a distraction-based society. I can remember 50 years ago, sitting in my room doing my homework. The option for distraction was limited; perhaps I could read a book or doodles. But if I wanted to get out and see friends or watch TV with the family. The homework had to be finished.
The fact is our average attention span has been dropping. It is now around 47 seconds, and we can see this in how a film or drama series are cut. We can see this in the success of YouTube shorts and Tick-Tok reels.
Boring Stuff is hard to do.
When the work is boring or has the potential to trigger us into states of fear or worry, it is not surprising that we look for some distraction.
In this podcast, we look at the problems. We will consider the importance of managing our energy and use feelings and emotions to motivate us to finish the work. One of those tools is accountability; one of the keys to my homework completion all those years ago was accountability to those around me.
These powerful tools are part of the kit in focus coaching. If you have a project or something that you want to change or are finding some resistance check out this video.

John Leister : Its Never Too Late
Wednesday Feb 07, 2024
Wednesday Feb 07, 2024
It’s never too late to discover your passion and inspiration. Is finding a path that works even after years of effort is possible?
My guest on this show was always creative, enjoying writing and acting, and life could have been different were it not for a debilitating skin condition. It took away his self-confidence and, with it, his dreams of acting, performing and writing.
Today, John Leister is a prolific self-published writer, excited by the possibility that every story is a new adventure. John was born in the 1960s and lives in Vancouver, Canada; from his early years, he always thought he would be in the creative industry. As a child, it was all about comics and drawing for hours.
His early education and work were uneventful, and while he thought that he could make his mark in the creative industry, it was not something he chose to follow.
In his early 20s, he walked past a drama school, went in out of interest and started acting classes. His writing talent was discovered here, and he started the journey towards an acting career. He had an agent and was attending auditions; he was an extra on a number of movies.
However, the acting life is tough, and you must be strong of mind and heart to take the slings and arrows of rejection. This was not easy for John, and it manifested into a skin condition called psoriasis, effectively ending his performance career.
It is never too late.
John has been a security guard for 35 years, and his writing has been his saviour, creating character and alter egos of himself. It took him years to publish these short stories, and in 2019 did it.
Our conversation is about that story, how he stepped out of his own limitations and became a published author. John is not your classic success tale. He is living life on his terms, at peace with his journey, and is content with where life is heading.
To find John’s books, check out the links below.

Shortcasts: Are you feeling it?
Sunday Feb 04, 2024
Sunday Feb 04, 2024
The question today is, are you feeling it? Our feelings have enormous power over our daily lives, and yet, for the most part, we are blissfully unaware that they are guiding our actions.
On this show, we are considering the power that feeling has over us, how feelings have more impact on our daily lives than we realise, and how we might harness that power to take us forward.
Are you feeling it? Physical Or Emotional.
We know physical feelings, pain, pleasure, hunger and thirst. These feelings trigger or motivate us to action that leads to a situation change. Emotional feelings can be the same and yet have no physical trigger. We are the trigger or more the point; our interpretation of the situation is the trigger.
Most of the reactive feelings we experience are responses to a situation filtered through memory or past experience. For example, if you were to meet someone for the first time and their voice triggered a painful experience from the past. It might make you cautious or less interested in the conversation.
Fears and phobias can often be traumatic past events being relived in the present.
While all of the sounds unpleasant, there is an upside. Actors use these techniques to give great emotional performances that are believable and look real. We can use these tools to project forward and create events and feelings around those events or goals we want to happen. Then, use those feelings as motivation to get there.
Check out the show to see how you can play with feelings and create your desired life.

Scott Stonham : Time to Stop Chasing
Thursday Feb 01, 2024
Thursday Feb 01, 2024
Welcome to part 2 of my conversation with Scott. The first part of our conversation was about his life in the mobile phone and tech industry. The bit you will hear now is about the shift.
It was the point when he found clarity and stopped chasing money and fame.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our guest on the show is a lifelong Innovator; it was his driving passion until something changed. Innovation is that seed of possibility; it is that inspiration that takes us forward to a future that is yet to be defined.
We can all get excited by innovation and possibility, and at the same time, I have lived long enough to see the unintended consequences of our best inventions. This conversation is about motivation and wonder and how one gets lost when the passion gets distorted by money and the search for status.
It is an amazing story of an innovator. Scott Stonham is a Brit born and raised in West London, now living in Reading.
Technology was always his jam. Inspired by his uncle, who was an electrician, he tinkered and played with things to see how they worked. As a teenager, his uncle gave him a bank of switches, and he set about automating the gadgets in his room.
He was not the classic geek, being a bit of a rebel who was inspired by movies like “Back to the Future”, which led to him learning to Skateboard—the Karate Kid, which led to martial arts and finally, the Terminator. Which lead to a university degree in Cybernetics.
Upon leaving University, there was no cybernetics industry to join, so Scott went into software engineering and later got a job on Vodaphone.
Scott Stonham is a lifelong innovator.
This podcast is a fascinating exploration of innovation and the development of mobile applications in the late 90s at a time when there was no need for them. They were creating the business use and the market for the technology they were developing.
Our guest, Scott Stonham, has helped bring to life many of the innovations that we take for granted, from the Mobile Internet to Smartphone Navigation. Over the last 25 years he had senior technology and marketing roles for multi-nationals, including Vodafone, Qualcomm and edgy technology start-ups in the UK, Europe and the USA.
Today, Scott focuses his energy on driving positive impacts for people, nature and the planet. He is driven by the UN sustainable development goals and channels his work through two ventures:
Leading an accelerator for Impact Startups and helping companies understand and address their digital carbon footprints.
Scott is an advisor, speaker, and author of the Exploring Digital Carbon Footprints report, a contributor to the Open University and the founder of Digital Carbon Online.

Shortcast : Thought and Belief
Sunday Jan 28, 2024
Sunday Jan 28, 2024
Thought and belief or beliefs and thought, what comes first, that would be the thought obviously it has to come first for one to believe it, but the question is how do we get to believe and is it important?
LINKS TO THE MONEY EXPERIMENT BELOW.
In this show, we are looking at the connection between thought and belief.
We have thousands of thoughts every day, many of which just pass through our minds without any connection or associated feeling.
Most of my work with people revolves around mindfulness or being conscious of things passing through our minds and being the observer.
When I do this, it can be surprising what passes through. We've spoken many times on this subject, particularly around the idea of how we perceive ourselves and how we value ourselves and those around us.
Unless I value myself and hold myself in high esteem, I will always sell myself short.
That is tangible proof of the connection between thought and belief. I have to believe a thought to make it real.
Have you ever played the power game, it is an acting exercise and I explore it in this show. This point is, through a series of exercises, big guys got pushed over just by the power of the words that were used.
My point is that we say, and the words we say to ourselves, have power over us. When we say negative things about ourselves we are giving ourselves that instruction. If we say positive things about ourselves, we are giving ourselves that instruction.
So, what do you want to achieve in your life this year? Do you believe you can achieve it, and are you committing to it?
I know from coaching and being reminded in the money program that there are several ways of achieving things, and there is an easy way and there is a hard way.
My sense on this is that the universe ( and our minds) will give us what we want on some level; if we believe something, it is going to be hard, it will be hard; if we believe, something will flow, then it will flow because we get kind of what we expect.
The Challenge for all of us is to map out what we want and believe we can have it and then take action to move towards it.
Now those actions will involve smart goals, they will involve accountability and all the sort of things to make something happen. But the key to remember here is bashing our heads against the wall for something is not the solution to the problem find a way around the wall.
If you want help with that you know where I am.
Now, speaking of big ideas and beliefs.

With other projects taking priority over editing this week, I thought to share this recording from March 2021. Angel Rebo, known as the CEO of Confidant, heads a consultancy for international business expansion and a charity teaching entrepreneurship to kids in Latin America.
The Money Experiment
How is your money thinking? I will keep reminding you because this stuff is more important than ever; I have done two shows with my thoughts: Money Bags and Thought and Money.
Check them out and or follow the money experiment link. it is about changing our relationship with the energy of money. That relationship with money is why lottery winners nearly always end up back where they started.
Promo Over Enjoy the show.
Today's guest on the show was born in Spain in a small town outside Barcelona. Angel Ribo, known as the CEO Confidant, heads a consultancy for international business expansion and a charity teaching entrepreneurship to kids in Latin America.

Languages were an early factor in his future success, Spanish, Catalan, French, English and Portuguese.
College Life
He went to college in the big city of Barcelona to study Engineering and Computer Coding. College life was good; he got his degree but realised that it was not going to be his career.
During college, he volunteered at the 1992 Olympic Games as part of the team, managing the scoring and stats for the volleyball competition. That was where he discovered the joy of working in teams as part of a bigger project.
Out of college and having established software and coding were not for him, he looked for work, and the universe helped. He took on an International Relations role at his college, a perfect opportunity to use his language skills and travel.
The big break came when Angel was headhunted by an Audiovisual Projects company in Barcelona, more project and teamwork with creative professionals.
The Joy of Travel
His degree was put to good use in 1999 when he moved to the UK and found work with an international company selling Software and Training. Living in the UK and working for a US company opened the door to sales, networking and lots of travel.
Over the last 21 years, Angel has empowered more than 1,500 CEOs in 33 different countries. He is a Public Speaker, CEO Consultant, Board Member, and Philanthropist and has lived in 8 countries.
Angel Ribo Has Two Missions In Life.
1) The non-profit Wisdom for Kids. There are 81 million children living in poverty in Latin America. “Wisdom for Kids” has already supported over 1000 families, and half of his coaching fee goes straight to the organisation.
2) The second mission is connected to the first, inspiring CEOs to give back to the world.
Our conversation is a journey of exploration, travel and discovery. I hope you enjoy the conversation with Angel Ribo.
