Kathryn Burmeister : Addiction to the Status Quo
Wednesday Aug 31, 2022
Wednesday Aug 31, 2022
Our show is about addiction, not to drugs but addiction to work and maintaining the status quo. There are times when hard work is required, but society and corporate culture have created the hustle and grind, a badge to be worn with honour.
My guest on the show is Kathryn Burmeister, a recovering Attorney.
Her desire to work in the law started in middle school. Kathryn was inspired by the books “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King Jr and “ To kill a Mocking Bird” by Harper Lee. Influential books that explore the law and the legal system. They planted the seed and set Kathryn on her life path of becoming an attorney.
During high school, she found work in various law firms to experience different types of practice before going off to study law school.
After passing the bar exam, she got her license and went on to practice in her dream job at a personal injury law firm, working for people looking for compensation.
It was a well-established firm; the managing partner had over 30 years of experience. He employed Kathyrn and a small team of attornies and paralegals.
For over a year, it was the dream job she had hoped for until that 2am when that text arrived. It changed everything.
The senior partner could no longer hide his deception and took his own life.
He had been stealing the client's money for years and the hole had become too big to cover. He chose to leave rather than face prison.
Kathryn, a fellow partner, and a paralegal decided to continue the business and find compensation for the clients her senior partner had so badly let down.
That was the start of her Addiction to the Status Quo, she and her team took on over 70 cases. It became a mission, and they worked every hour they could.
Living on adrenaline, she was the emotional support to her clients and the team. It became an addiction with a price because Kathryn spent every moment thinking about this situation, and it was too much.
During high school and again in law school, Kathryn experienced anxiety and depression. The exhaustion and overwork brought these feelings back to the surface, and now she was considering her own suicide.
It had to stop.
Our conversation is about her journey to recovery. It is about the status quo, the expectation from corporate culture and society that drives people into long hours and the building of unhealthy lives.
It is the recognition that there must be a balance between intense work and life, less it becomes an addiction or worse. It requires boundaries to be set and maintained.
The experience led Kathyrn to write the book, “Overcoming Addiction to the Status Quo”. On the show, you can hear that she is passionate about mental health and self-improvement.
Today she is a regular speaker at events on self-care, business, and law.
She is also “The happiness lawyer”, supporting others in the legal profession to find their work-life balance.

Shortcast : More Than A Feeling
Monday Aug 29, 2022
Monday Aug 29, 2022
Is love more than a feeling? On the shortcast, we're exploring love; it is the last big topic in our series on emotions.
So what is love? From my perspective, it really is more Than A Feeling.
Have you ever considered what love means to you?
It can be argued that love is the most misunderstood and misrepresented emotion. When you consider love songs, they're more like need songs than love songs. Because the expression is often not about love but of loss or desire?
That is the point love gets mixed up with desire and scratching the hormonal itch.
So join me in this conversation. We will explore how love can change your world. When we get past the passion and the sex, much more is to be discovered.
When we practice love in action, the world around us gets better; included in this episode are a couple of potent love exercises that you can try.

Zak Moore : Embracing Change
Thursday Aug 25, 2022
Thursday Aug 25, 2022
How do you deal with change?
My guest on the show is Zak Moore; he was lucky to witness change early in his career. He sees change as an opportunity to find our gifts and give them away.
In his early years, Zak was good at maths and physics, which led to university and on to Aberdeen for work in the oil and gas industry.
He was encouraged to move south with a company going into project management and consultancy. It was the mid-80s, and computers were appearing in the office. One of the first machines was given to the youngster ( Zak ) to sort it out.
Zak discovered the power of spreadsheets and witnessed how automation changed the office beyond recognition over the next few years.
It set him on a path of learning and development in the technology sector. The zenith of his technology career was in 2000, when he managed a large development team from oxford and Cambridge. Together they created a digital music system that paid artists for downloads.
That was two years before the apple iPod, but needles to say, Apple won that game, and Zak was out of a job. He went back to writing code and took on a part-time MBA course
What inspired him most was the module on creative problem solving, and he developed a methodology to support companies in agile thinking.
It went very well until 2015 when an ear infection spread to his brain and became meningitis, which put him into a coma. The condition swells the brain, leaving them with physical and mental changes if the patient survives. Sometimes it creates a whole new personality.
Zak's survived, possibly because of his ability to embrace change, which supported him through the difficult road to recovery. As you will hear in the intro, he had some beautiful experiences with synesthesia. While struggling with issues of sight, hearing and balance, he decides to take on a marathon challenge to raise money for a meningitis charity.
Our conversation is not about technology; it is about change, the books and reading that supported him. But it is wider that Zak was always a deep thinker, and meningitis has given him a new take on the world.
"When you get hit with something, you can always get something good to come out of it. "
We speak about change, how society follows trends, the coming of AI, and how gaming and gamification will change the world.
Today Zak builds and runs computer systems and supports people and companies in the techniques of agile thinking.
Let's join the conversation with Zak Moore.

Olly Hermon-Taylor : Creating A Life To Love
Wednesday Aug 17, 2022
Wednesday Aug 17, 2022
In this show we explore.
Brand building, entrepreneurship, holistic marketing, health and fitness and living a life that feeds us. It is a deep conversation about the world in which we live, how to find your story, and the path towards your best life.,
Images, shapes and forms always inspired Olly Herman-Taylor. While at school, he discovered a passion for design and spent his days doodling, creating logos, and drawing.
At college, he got a degree in English; on leaving, he went into the building industry, working on-site in the family business. Carrying bricks up and down ladders made him strong and fit, giving him an appreciation for movement and using his body.
But the inspiration to design was calling; it was music or clothes, feeling he might be tone deaf he chose clothes.
Olly started a t-shirt design business producing and selling shirts on the London street markets. But T-shirts would never make him rich, so he looked to his other passion, snowboarding.
Coming up with a unique design for a snowboarding jacket, he located a company that agreed to produce them if he could sell 500 jackets. He returned with an order for 5000, and his business was born.
He was just 23 and starting a business with no plan, and it worked.
For seven years, he did some fantastic stuff, creating a lifestyle business and taking it to over a million pounds, but that journey involved compromise, and it stopped feeding his soul. Now with a young family, he sold the brand and took some time out to be with his kids and consider his next steps.
He transitioned to Health and Fitness and set about creating a natural fitness brand, and this time life did not roll so easy seven years later. He was depressed, in debt and unhappy.
Our conversation is about his journey out of the hole he had created. He discovered the darker sides of marketing in the fitness industry. As already mentioned, it is a deep conversation about this world and what the system will do to us when we allow it.
Today Olly Herman-Taylor calls himself a Bio Hacker and high-performance coach. He helps entrepreneurs upgrade their mindset, transform their health, uncover their purpose and create a life they love. He is also the host Torchbearer™ podcast and co-founder of Rare Partners, a story-based communication agency.

Shortcast : Feeling the Fear
Sunday Aug 14, 2022
Sunday Aug 14, 2022
Are you feeling the fear? In this show, we touch on the power of media and the fear industry, phobias and the power of stepping through your fear.
FEAR! There is a lot of it in the air. The world is an uncertain place and the media delights in telling us about it. For many fear is the siamese twin of uncertainty.
Today in this shortcast I am exploring fear. It is another one of the powerful emotions that shape our lives and so much of the world. I've picked fear because it is another big impactful emotion which can drive and changes lives. As a force for change, we can choose to step up and overcome our fears and our world expands.
Reacting to Information
Like all of the emotions we've been talking about fear is an interpretation or reaction to information that we've received. The problem is those reactions are often about keeping us safe, and not always serving our best interests.
Yes, it is about safety feeling the fear is keeping us small, like everything in life the best bits are on the other side of something scary.
I have spoken on the subject of fear before and how it is used in the marketing world. When we are in fear we are more suggestive and more willing to take the quick fix solution that is being offered.
Where are you with your fear?

Matt Ward : The Value of Caring
Wednesday Aug 10, 2022
Wednesday Aug 10, 2022
In this show, we are exploring freedom, making choices and living the life you want to live, but more importantly, we are looking at the value of caring.
We all care about those close to us, family and friends, but what about other people? Caring is an underrated value. My guest's formative years were at a unique school where he learned the value and importance of caring. It has shaped his life and work, bringing him everything he ever wanted.
Matt Ward was born the 3rd child to a low-income family with problems. He is the only sibling to finish High school, go to college and avoid prison.
How he avoided the path to jail is down to the universe giving him a break. At the age of 10 (sixth grade), he received a scholarship to the Milton Hershey Boarding School.
Attending this school put Matt on a new path; it taught him values, one of which was caring, and it became the theme of his life.
He left the Hershey School and went to college, he was interested and hotel and restaurant management, but that did not work out for him, as he did not have the interest or patience for cooking.
While volunteering at a youth football club in 1999, an opportunity appeared. They needed a website for this new internet craze, and Matt got asked to build it. Once other clubs saw the result, they all wanted a website, so he started a web design business.
The business grew year on year and employed eight people. Matt’s focus was always sales and relationships. He particularly enjoyed speaking at events and meeting people.
By 2018 the business was still growing but not feeding his soul; he was working hard but felt he was going nowhere. He sold it to one of his employees for a seven-figure sum and stepped out into the world of professional speaking.
Our conversation as always is about the journey. It is about self-discovery, the moving towards freedom and living by the phrase “ Do me ”.
We talk about friendship and building relationships, it is a place where men often struggle when the context is outside of work. Matt thrives around the idea of freedom and the joy of living. His purpose is speaking and sharing the concept of caring but also about sharing the school that changed his life.
Since starting on his speaking journey, Matt has written three books, The host at The Mass Business Podcast, a paid keynote speaker and a word-of-mouth referral consultant.

Shortcast : Do You Get Angry
Sunday Aug 07, 2022
Sunday Aug 07, 2022
Is there something that really gets you mad? Why, and have you ever unpacked it?
This show will cover where anger comes from and offer some simple techniques that you can use to deal with anger in everyday situations.
We all get angry from time to time; the modern world expects us to. I get riled by politics and social media and the stuff that life throws at me from time to time.
The media feeds on our anger and seeks to torment us because by feeding our righteous indignation, it creates promotes comments and continues the conversations. That means more opportunity to stoke opinions and show adverts.
But why do we get so angry?
Today's podcast is the first in the series I promised to look at Feelings and emotions last week. We start with a big one, anger, and wow, there is so much of it.
So its simplest form, we get angry because the world around us does not fit the picture we have of it. Or there is an unmet need inside of us. So anger does not come from the outside; it's generated from within you.
The exciting thing about anger is that it presents an opportunity to recognise that change needs to happen and can provide us with the fuel to make that change.

Rocky Lalvani : Take The First Step
Wednesday Aug 03, 2022
Wednesday Aug 03, 2022
Are you setting your course, are you taking that first step?
My guest on the show is an example of someone living a good life by design a man who came from humble beginnings.
Rocky Lalvani was born in India, when he was two years old, the family emigrated to the US, and while it was a great opportunity, the family had to start at the bottom.
It was a tough beginning, but they worked hard as immigrant families do, the American dream inspired them, and they built their wealth.
During Rocky’s early life, there were lots of success and money conversations with other ex-pat communities. While listening to these family chats, he learned the importance of negotiation and how to hustle.
Starting with his paper route, he discovers how good service leads to good tips. At college, he was buying and selling stuff until he secured a real-estate licence to sell properties.
After finishing high school and going to college, he did a degree in Economics and went out into the world to work.
He did many jobs and eventually built a solid business creating operational and management spreadsheets for small businesses.
Rocky’s challenge was that he found it almost impossible to take the first steps and move his life forward. Our conversation is not about the work he did but the wisdom he developed. We touch on mentors, health, fitness, food and more. All of the steps that help him move forward and build the life he wanted.
Today Rocky calls himself the Chief Profitability Adviser for business owners. He teaches them how to ensure they get paid and that they make pro

Shortcast : Feelings and Emotions
Sunday Jul 31, 2022
Sunday Jul 31, 2022
Were you aware of any strong feelings or emotions this week?
We are about to start a series of shortcast on the theme of feeling and emotion, and today I thought to explore why I have come to this.
I realised that I could go a whole week and not be aware of my emotions. Now the reality is I have them, but they are being experienced without my awareness.
There is every possibility that I am reacting to these triggered emotions and may be acting inappropriately, given the situation.
I got onto this thinking train because I had an emotional response to a piece of music on a playlist.
We live in a world designed to trigger our emotions. We are being pushed to react our feelings are a big part of our lives, and yet we give them so little thought.
Join me in this short exploration of why it is vital that we become aware of our thoughts and feelings.
And yes, there is a little bit of homework if you want it. ( Smile )

Steve Cook : Squeezing The Sponge
Thursday Jul 28, 2022
Thursday Jul 28, 2022
Our conversation is a little different this week as this story has no fall, crash or upheaval. However, it is about good communication and the search for meaning and purpose.
My guest is unusual in that he is younger than most. What makes him interesting is he is the third generation of a thriving family business. The transition between father and son was without drama.
Steve Cook was born in Oklahoma and has never left.
As a child, Steve mirrored his dad and wanted to be like him. As he went to college, his Dad became a restauranter, and steve followed that interest in his studies.
By the time Steve was leaving college, the family had sold the restaurant and bought into the family horse feed business.
On stepping out into the world of work, Steve considered various careers before entering the family business. There is a lot of potential baggage when it comes to working with family.
Our conversation is about his journey into the business, finding his feet up to the point where he took it over. The company is one of the largest feed suppliers in the USA, which is due to the successful working relationship between Steve and his father.
We take about his challenges and, of course, the usual five questions.
Steve did not say he was passionate about horse feed, but he is passionate about business and what it takes to run it well.
That is how we met as steve is the host of the Better Business Podcast and squeezing the sponge is his view on getting the most out of life.

Shortcast : Reviewing Your Story
Sunday Jul 24, 2022
Sunday Jul 24, 2022
It is time to look at your story and see if it still fits in a changing world because try as you might ignore what is happening it will still happen.
As someone who is passionate about moving people forward, I have been doing a lot of thinking about where I'm going and what I offer, and that is making me do is re-evaluate my story.
The podcast was born out of the same impulse, looking at change and finding role models that could lead me in my change.
It worked, here we are four years later, and I have discovered what it is that makes all of the difference. Your story, the narrative that you live and breathe.
In this show, we explore why having a living story is important and how you can develop a story, path or narrative that matters to you.
At the end of the day, we must do the work to build our resilience and create the life we want to live. In my opinion that is the power of the five questions.
Now you can use the questions on the home page of the website or you can go to the resources tab and buy the workbook that will take you through the process.

Wendy Lee Hargett : Aligned with Joy
Wednesday Jul 20, 2022
Wednesday Jul 20, 2022
I had heard it said that for most people, 50% of our battles had been won before we got here. It is hard to appreciate what some people go through until you hear stories in the media or on podcasts like mine.
Our conversation today is a story of trauma, forgiveness and healing. It has a happy ending, but wow, the journey to get there was hard.
Wendy Hargett was born on a wooden fishing boat in Hawaii, the third unwanted child in a low-income family.
She was adopted within weeks, but it was an unstable relationship, and her adoptive parents divorced when she was still in nappies. Her adoptive father brought her up in a single-parent family, which were some of her happiest memories.
Her grandmother became a pivotal figure in her young life, and that relationship will become significant later.
The family moved a lot for economic reasons, and while it was loving childhood, it was not happy. Her father eventually remarried when she was seven; sadly, her stepmom was abusive. Three years later, she was shipped off across the country to a religious commune, which was also abusive.
Rejected by her family again, she could see no end to her mystery and tried to take her life. ( she was 10), it was the first of many times where she considered ending it all.
“I felt like a disposable child. I felt like gods biggest mistake when I was born”
She did not believe that she was good enough for a college education and way forward.
Wendy worked in the airline industry and moved on to become a special ed teaching assistant. She was always interested in writing and became a copywriter. She had children and vowed to be the best mother she could be.
However, her past would not go away, and she was living a life with unresolved trauma.
A copy-writing conference in Las Vegas changed it all for her. She met a soul-sister, a woman who became a dear friend and kick-started the healing journey.
Our conversation is about that transformation; it is about releasing the past's fear, anger, and frustration. Moving through her pain and discovering her true I AM.

Shortcast: Choosing Happy
Sunday Jul 17, 2022
Sunday Jul 17, 2022
I was slightly triggered this week when I saw a post about happiness. Some of these things can be made to look so simple, and the reality is they are not.
The question was, is happiness a choice.
The point is that our reaction to something triggers all happiness, which can come from the inside or outside.
Most people do not make that connection because the world is set up to make you believe that it is all external. So it is not as simple as a choice, and it is about becoming conscious of what makes you happy and how you can find that on the inside.
My point was telling someone that the choice is theirs while they have the weight of the world on their backs is unhelpful, and that is why I felt a little triggered.
The truth behind that question is a journey; many people have never had the support tools or resources to discover that.
I have interviewed hundreds of people, and we can all find our route to the question and its answer. In this show, I will offer five tools to demonstrate that happiness comes from the inside and to cultivate more joy in life.

Jurgen Strauss : Valued Relationships
Thursday Jul 14, 2022
Thursday Jul 14, 2022
Do you pick your challenges? Are you ready to make a break to get what you want?
My guest on the show today is one of those people. He tells me he has been lucky and life has treated him well, and it has, but I suspect that is because he was prepared to take the opportunities as they arrived.
Jürgen Strauss was born in Germany as a child; his family emigrated to Australia. In the late 1950s, Australia was a very English culture. As a German-speaking child with a funny name and accent, he experienced a lot of prejudice.
His father was an engineer looking for something practical and went to college and got a degree in chemistry. Staying in education, he used his language skills to find a post-doctoral fellowship at a German university.
