Shortcast : Write it or Lose it
Sunday Oct 08, 2023
Sunday Oct 08, 2023
Write it or lose it; what does that mean? In business, everything is recorded transactions, notes of meetings, etc. So why is it that in our personal life, we rarely write down our intentions?
There is a saying in business that unless something is measured, it is not managed. Without written intentions, goals or plans for our general life, we are not managing the path to them.
In this week’s shortcast, we’re exploring how the plasticity of our minds means unless we write something down, we lose it. So write it or lose it is the only way forward.
We briefly touch on journaling and secrets and gems you might find—goals, intentions, and why affirmations work.
All that is a very compact conversation

Steve Cook : Squeezing The Sponge
Wednesday Oct 04, 2023
Wednesday Oct 04, 2023
Taking an editing break this week, here is a great conversation from July 22
Our conversation is slightly different this week as this story has no fall, crash or upheaval. However, it is about good communication and the search for meaning and purpose.
My guest is unusual in that he is younger than most. What makes him interesting is he is the third generation of a thriving family business. The transition between father and son was without drama.
Steve Cook was born in Oklahoma and has never left.
As a child, Steve mirrored his dad and wanted to be like him. As he went to college, his Dad became a restauranter, and steve followed that interest in his studies.
By the time Steve was leaving college, the family had sold the restaurant and bought into the family horse feed business.
On stepping out into the world of work, Steve considered various careers before entering the family business. There is a lot of potential baggage when it comes to working with family.
Our conversation is about his journey into the business, finding his feet up to the point where he took it over. The company is one of the largest feed suppliers in the USA, which is due to the successful working relationship between Steve and his father.
We take about his challenges and, of course, the usual five questions.
Steve did not say he was passionate about horse feed, but he is passionate about business and what it takes to run it well.
That is how we met as steve is the host of the Better Business Podcast and squeezing the sponge is his view on getting the most out of life.

Shortcast : Catastrophising
Sunday Oct 01, 2023
Sunday Oct 01, 2023
Are you guilty of Catastrophising? We have all been there at some point; once started, it is a circle that becomes a downward spiral.
A client discussion prompted our topic this week. They are experiencing a financial gap, and it is not getting any smaller. I know it’s a problem that many people are finding where there is more month than money to go around.
Whether it was a bad day or a bad week, this particular conversation was spiralling down to the bottom of the swamp.
The problem was they had locked onto a train of thought, and the conversation was becoming tighter and tighter, about all the possible things going wrong had gone wrong this week and would go wrong next week.
I appreciate that this situation is complex and that many people are in similar problems. But what is very clear to me with a nod to Einstein.
We are never going to change a circumstance or a situation by using the same thinking that got us into that situation or circumstance.
Getting out of any fix will take fresh thinking, creative solutions and maybe even doing the unthinkable. When we Catastrophise, all of our resilience goes, and the mind locks onto the worst-case scenario.
What is needed is expansive thinking.
Some tools can help. I’ve spoken about living in the spiral many times and the work I do to keep myself moving upward. If I don’t do the work, I tend to slip downwards. So that means, for me, a daily practice, daily work on myself.
On this show, we explore the problem of catastrophising, my experience and the best solution to get out of that line of thinking.

Dr Heather Browne : Trauma and Self-Love
Thursday Sep 28, 2023
Thursday Sep 28, 2023
Our conversation is about trauma and self-love; it is an extraordinary journey of survival and learning to love and heal herself.
Heather Browne had an odd but wonder-filled childhood. It was beautiful, creative and magical. When your coat is a polar bear that will keep you warm, it is both disturbing and incredible. She had no idea that her mother’s stories, creativity, and pretending to be different people came from schizophrenia. Or that it was unusual until that day her mother became Judy, the Babysitter while they were in the laundromat.
She was eight years old when life took a turn and suddenly not so wonderful. Heather witnessed and experienced abuse, trauma, alcoholism, and finally abandonment as she was disowned. leaving her dysfunctional family at 17, she went to New York and put herself through college.
While life had been tough, she had learned how to survive, function and act as if everything was normal. But on the inside, she was hollow out and unloved. She did a lot of churches and temples, looking for God, meaning and who she was.
Acting was her first choice of career, but she was guided to move away and help other people; it led her to train as a psychotherapist, and as she read the books to learn, she realised that she was the book.
“The only person you truly have is you; how do you love and take care of yourself.”
It is a story of trauma and self-love, learning to be loved and rebuilding and helping others do the same.
Over her 27-year career, Heather has worked with thousands of individuals and couples in psychotherapy. She has been published in hundreds of journals, has an active YouTube channel, has been featured on TV and media, and, as of last weekend, she is a TEDx speaker.
“We get one shot at being this human. Let’s make sure it is worth it.”

Shortcast : The Liking Gap
Sunday Sep 24, 2023
Sunday Sep 24, 2023
What is the liking gap? Have you ever been in a conversation with a group of people, that went well, But after you start having doubts?
Some people run these conversations like a tape thinking and I wishing they hadn’t said something. Or remembering expressions on people’s faces and being convinced that they have offended them in some way.
In this podcast, we are exploring the liking gap, it is the stories and interpretations that we create in the absence of real feedback.
The standard coaching approach to this issue is to remind the client of something very important.
What other people think of me is none of my business.
It is a phrase gets pushing in personal development I’ve even used it with clients and been on the receiving end of it.
It is so true because what other people think of me, is what goes inside other people’s heads. I have absolutely no control over it. So worrying about it is not going to serve, but that doesn’t stop us worrying about it.
So I was fascinated this week to discover some work by Erica Boothby From the University of Pennsylvania. She and her team did some research in this process, looking at how we perceive that gap between what we think someone is thinking and our interpretation of it.
It is called the liking gap, and there are some simple strategies to reduce how it affects us.

Noomi Naton : Inner Power Revisited.
Wednesday Sep 20, 2023
Wednesday Sep 20, 2023
As I am travelling this week there is no time for editing, so thought to take us back to a popular show with Noomi Naton. Back on Sunday with a shortcast.
Our conversation is about discovering inner power but as with all stories, the journey is never a straight line.
On the show, you will discover the power of changing chairs and a helpful question “ How can I be more of me and have a greater impact.”
Noomi Natan was born in Copenhagen, at nineteen, most of her friends were travelling. In Denmark, it is common to take a generous gap year before completing a university education. She was working at a temporary job in advertising and wondered if she could live and work in London.
She could and found a job in a sound studio, before hopping across the pond for a 3-month internship in the US Congress. All of that experience led her back to Copenhagen to complete a degree in journalism, although she had no intention of being a journalist.
Education over she returned to London and secures a great job in commercial conference production for the mobile games industry, which was booming.
She was crazy successful for a while, with money and lifestyle. That was until the pressure, overwork, and perfectionism eroded her ability to function. She was miserable much of the time and cried in the toilet.
The crunch came when she was asked to run a project she did not want. She had to work US hours from a London office and struggled without support.
At this point, a coach friend said to her, “ you know you could speak to a doctor and get signed off from work?”
That was the beginning of moving out of the mobile industry.
Our conversation explores coaching and how that fits with the path towards a good life. We look at success and why it can be a difficult journey, contribution and, of course, the big question, what is it all for?
Finding her Inner Power
Noomi describes herself as a recovered perfectionist and a practical idealist who dreams of a world, which is safe for everyone. What a lovely idea. As you will hear on the show, she took her first coaching call 15 years ago and was instantly hooked.
Since then, she has developed her process and specialises in deeply transformational work and helping clients in a wide range of industries, from the owners of micro-businesses to CEOs of prominent household names.

Shortcast Too Much Pleasure
Sunday Sep 17, 2023
Sunday Sep 17, 2023
We live in a world where pleasure is readily available. Although seeking pleasure is a natural human tendency, the constant availability of instant gratification provided by society, businesses, and the media is causing us to become unhappy and unfulfilled.
In our last show, we explored how grit and struggle are the points in life where we experience the most growth. This week, I discovered the work of Dr. Anna Lembke, the Author of the book Dopamine.
Dr Lembke is a clinical psychologist at Stamford University and has been exploring the effect of overstimulation with Dopamine and how the brain will look to bring us back into balance. But when we are awash with stimulants, balance can mean a lack of motivation, sadness and depression.
Her work is on addiction; we all have them: food, drink, and drugs, and now there are new forms of addiction: Binge TV, Games and social media.
Through her work, it is clear that earning our dopamine is the key to real happiness.
We all know this: the win is all the more sweet when there is a struggle. So now I understand why running makes me feel good. And so many of my friends rave about cold water swimming.

Steve Gamlin : Teacher of People
Wednesday Sep 13, 2023
Wednesday Sep 13, 2023
It was one of Steves’s dreams to be a teacher of people; it was right up there along with Radio DJ, stand-up comedian, and an author. It has been a journey, but he has achieved them all.
Our conversion is a recovery journey, not from the usual addiction or problems but from self-depreciation. There is power in what we think, believe or say about ourselves. It is the difference between enjoying or enduring this life journey.
My guest this week is Steve Gamlin, who had a wonderful childhood in the northeast of the US, with great parents, family and friends and incredible memories. It was then that he had those life-shaping dreams: the Radio DJ, Stand-up comedian, an author and a teacher.
“I’ve managed to enjoy them all, now I have crashed and burned between them, but the seeds and the ashes one always led to the next.”
He went to college doing four years in business studies, scraping his graduation. It did not work for him; he left with his confidence crushed and no self-esteem, broke and sleeping on his grandfather’s sofa.
The impulse to take action.
A caring friend asked about his radio dreams, which gave him the impulse to act. He borrowed $4000 from his grandfather and did an 8-week broadcasting course, leading to an internship that started a ten-year radio career.
As you will hear, radio is not all it is cracked up to be, but it is not a healthy environment when you are in the public domain and struggling with self-image.
Steve has achieved all of his dreams from his 11-year-old self, although, in his words, he had to burn his life to ashes every time.
Becoming a teacher of people
What you will hear in this conversion is a man with a lovely radio voice who has turned his life around by carefully managing his thinking. Steve optimises his daily routines to create the life he wants to live.
He hosts the motivational Firewood podcast and works with people to create a back-to-basics positivity through visualisation & humour. Steve is the teacher of people he always wanted to be. Helping people build the necessary mindset to identify their goals, feel sound and smell like.

Shortcast : Gratitude and Grititude
Sunday Sep 10, 2023
Sunday Sep 10, 2023
Gratitude and grititude, in life there will always be ups and downs and it’s easy to be grateful for the good bits but how could we learn appreciation for the challenges.
On this show today we look at grititude. Over the last few weeks we’ve been looking at this idea of being grateful and finding places where we can savour moments to create more gratitude.
But the truth is the maximum growth in life come when we are challenged, it arrives when we are pushed to bring out greater resources to find a path through. These are the bits that are painful and not the experience we would choose. But they are the points in life that provide the greatest opportunity for change.
Growth and Resilience
We’re exploring the idea of being grateful for the crap bits and exploring how those parts of your life will lead you towards greater resilience and a greater capacity to deal with whatever’s coming down the line.
Many of our guests on the podcast experience a fall of some kind. Some of them have lost everything in their lives, and they have created something genuinely extraordinary out of that disaster. When asked if they would go back and change anything, they often say no.
That is what we’re talking about. It’s that capacity to recognise those parts of their lives and see them as opportunities for growth. Because as long as we hold fear of the gritty bits, we lose our capacity to change anything. Only when we can truly embrace them do we achieve full resilience and the ability to react or whatever life delivers.

Shortcast : Learning to Savour
Sunday Sep 03, 2023
Sunday Sep 03, 2023
Learning to savour is about looking for those parts of the day worth remembering and paying attention with heightened awareness.
In our last shortcast, we looked at gratitude, the simple act of being thankful for what has passed during the day. In this show, we explore the practice of savouring—a process of heightened awareness where we slow down and give all of our attention to the moment.
The point of savouring is to appreciate moments of magic and wonder that happen during the day. It is about creating opportunities that give us reason to be grateful later.
We are biologically programmed to look for the problems, crises, or threats to our existence. To the point where we will pass by the beauty and wonder of the ordinary.
In this show we explore my experience with savouring and how you could use it to enrich your daily experience.

Shortcast : Community Building
Sunday Aug 20, 2023
Sunday Aug 20, 2023
The power of community building, our communities are the social glue that holds life together and is so underrated. Only when we cut off, do we notice the gap and then the loss.
The podcast explores why community is essential, what happens when a community is broken, and why it is fundamental to human existence. Community is about the groups of people we identify with and support.
The word community is a word that is used often in business and in politics but what does it mean? In the news, we often hear that that’s that phrase from the business community or the wider community.
Are you consciously community building?
We all make assumptions that we live in a community and yet the description of what that means is actually very loose. Could you put a name or word to yours?
However, take your community access away and see what happens. Covid was a catalyst that both created and destroyed our communities. While it was not possible to meet in person, people stepped up and helped each other with food or shopping. However, that separation from our usual groups took its toll on so many.
Change is Coming
On Friday I was invited to a private viewing of a film set in the Findhorn Foundation. It is a well-established spiritual and ecovillage community. Brexit, Covid and then an arson attack have made the holding organisation insolvent, and huge change is coming. The film explored how difficult the journey has been, and opened the conversation about what is to come. I am on the perimeter of these changes and I am sure I will get to witness the best and the most difficult aspect of community leadership and decision-making as this story unfolds.
But it has made me think about my community and how I need to be more consciously building a network around me.
In this programme, I invite you to look at your circles and groups and how can you make them stronger. As Stephen Covey said we need to make time to sharpen the saw.

Jon Rennie : Deep Leadership
Wednesday Aug 16, 2023
Wednesday Aug 16, 2023
Deep leadership is a play on Jon’s history; he was serving officer aboard a nuclear submarine during the cold war. Our podcast is about the transition between services and civic street. But it is also about the application of a leadership style.
My guess on the show today is John Rennie; he runs a successful business manufacturing critical components for electrical utilities. He’s also a podcast host and the author of three books on leadership.
Jon was born to a family in Manchester, New Hampshire, just north of Boston. It is a blue-collar town, and people do not leave. He was born to young parents with equally young grandparents. His Grandfathers had both served in WW2 and talked fondly of military service.
While John was born to a loving family, life was abundant, but funds were limited, and while he father extolled the virtue of getting to college. That opportunity would only be possible with a scholarship.
He was fascinated by engineering and submarines and expressed the idea of becoming a serving officer.
Nobody wants to be an officer on a submarine.
The high school career person was surprised but did his research and found an opportunity. The Navy had a scholarship degree program which led to officer training. He got accepted, did his four years of college, achieved an engineering degree, and entered the Navy as a commissioned officer.
Our conversation is a fascinating insight into the life of a nuclear submarine, but it’s more than that. It’s what John learned from his experience in the military and how we took that out into the business world.
I often hear from people who have served that transitioning between service life and Civic Street is very difficult. Jon did struggle for seven years, but he applied his navy principles to his work, and the rest is history.
He led eight manufacturing businesses for three global companies for 22 years until he started his own business manufacturing company producing critical components for electrical utilities. He has written three books on leadership and hosts the Deep Leadership podcast.
There are many lessons to be learned here. But the biggest challenge we discussed in detail is to start a business does not mean creating a job.
