Shortcast : Choose Your Challenge
Sunday Jun 25, 2023
Sunday Jun 25, 2023
Do you choose your challenge or let life throw them at you? The point is life throws things at us, it’s not meant to be a journey a unicorns and roses there are meant to be ups and downs a life of colour.
This Saturday, at 11 am, I started running in a 100-mile team race, it took us 18 hours I and I ran 28 miles with a few big hills. I thought it would be great, the truth was mixed but still great.
On this show we are looking at how the media is driving the message of fear and how you can build your resilience to rise above it all. Because there is a certain power in taking charge and choosing the challenge.
We had 2 four-person teams and our job was to run 100 miles over a maximum of 24 hours, Running in pairs one from each team, it was about pacing each other and navigation. Th course was mixed terrain and easy to get lost.
I have to say it was brutal I covered 28 miles over the 18 hours it took to complete the course, I got home at 5.30 am this morning made a bacon roll and went to bed.
I have been a zombie all day and it is now late afternoon and I wanted to get this podcast out my six which may not happen.
What did I learn from the experience?
I can do hard things, and the pain passes
I put my needs first and took care of my body, I was clear with my teammate about what I needed. While I did the same for them.
Everyone reacts differently to challenges and when supported people are amazing.
So how can you bring the power of challenge into your life?

Shortcast : The Story Meets Reality
Sunday May 14, 2023
Sunday May 14, 2023
What happens when the story meets reality? Because we can believe whatever we want, but there are times when the vision and the picture do not align.
I had a very visceral example of that on Saturday.
If you have been following me for a while, you know that I have a passion for running. It gives some meaning to my life because, when I run it brings my mind and my body together in one place operating in harmony.
So I’ve been training to run my fastest ever 10K, if you saw my socials or you’re on my list, you’d have heard the story about how I have an unofficial time and what to beat it will and official time.
I did first 10K was back in 2018 at 51:55, I did and unofficial race in 2021 at 48:51 and last year I did a local race at 50:01
Now father time is working against me, I am nearly 60. But I had trained hard, and I had a story in my head where I could get a sub-47-minute time. I had a vision in my head where I could see myself achieving it.
The Story Meets Reality

But the reality on the day was very different, it was way hotter than I was expecting.
This podcast is my journey through that process. It’s about how we stay focused but at the same time allow for the reality of the situation and take it as information rather than failure.
Because everything we experience is new information to be taken forward for the next experience. So spoiler alert I didn’t make the time I was looking for I got 49:19.
There is a bigger concern. However, for that, you’ll need to listen to the podcast.

Karen Darke : Wouldn’t it be Amazing
Thursday Mar 30, 2023
Thursday Mar 30, 2023
Wouldn’t it be amazing or WIBA is a phrase coined by Karen Darke and she uses it to dream up adventures and possible outcomes for her life.
As promised on the weekend show, here is the recording with Karen Darke from our 2020 event Reasons and Results. The talk was titled wouldn’t it be amazing and explores Karen’s process with mindsets and motivation.
So who is Karen Darke. A google search will tell your she is a British Adventurer, she is a Paralympic Cyclist, Para-triathlete, Explorer and Author.
In her youth Karen trained as a Geologist and was a crazy mountain climber with no fear of heights. Until at 23 she had a serious fall and was paralysed from the chest down. The path of her life changed at the moment.
While the route was not a straight line it turned her into the adventurer she is today, she has skied, and cycled on all continents and is he proud owner of Gold Medal from the Rio Olympics.
Our conversation explores the path of her Olympic journey and so much more. In the show she is planning an adventure in to Arctic circle and I know she completed that journey over Christmas 2022.
This recording was part of the event Reason and Results
If you would like to work with Karen directly she has a event in May called "Adventure in Possibility" and you can find the details here

Shortcast Living Beyond
Sunday Nov 06, 2022
Sunday Nov 06, 2022
Are you living beyond? Last week I spoke about how I was limiting myself by dithering over the race this weekend.
I have had a few more thoughts and want to talk to you about living beyond. Because this aspect of limits is a far broader conversation
Limits are everywhere, from society, employers, family and culture. And, of course, reality will give us a quick reminder of our limits far quicker than we can do it for ourselves.
So I encourage you to constantly push the boundaries rather than practice limitations; when we push, it is empowering.
It is about awareness. I know that my life gets smaller when I think smaller and bigger when I think bigger. When we can think outside of physical or mental limits, it is our thinking that moves forward.
With that awareness, we can change how we move forward and start living beyond
Living beyond our limits
In this show, we look at how breathing into a limit makes it a reality and how we might look beyond it and find the resources needed to get through it.
Last week before entering the race, my dithering was that I did not want to prove I am getting older. It was my breathing into being 59 and staring at 60. I left an open question on the podcast: Can I run 10K in under 48 minutes?
Spoiler no, I did not. However, I am ok with that.
In this show, I demonstrate how I used a process to make it possible for me to get through my limiting thoughts around this 10k race. The plan worked, well, sort of. I did not make the 48 minutes. But my race time today was 50 minutes and 1 second. Gutting not to get under 50 minutes.
As I said I am happy with that and it has given me a target to explore in 2023.

Shortcast Your Limits
Monday Oct 31, 2022
Monday Oct 31, 2022
Who sets your limits? I was reminded this weekend that I have been setting limits for myself and there really is no need when reality will do that for without my help.
As you know running is a big part of my life and I recently completed a marathon in Inverness not quite in the time that I wanted but very close.
That was nearly a month back and next weekend the running club is organising a 10k and I have been in several minds if I should enter. In truth, I have nothing to lose, outside of a previous personal best that I recorded at this time last year.
So what am I afraid of? My limits, I have trained very differently this year it has all been about endurance. A 10k is all about speed and don’t know what that means for me.
But Saturday was a training session and I was getting some good lap times. So who says I cannot run this race at speed?
That is the point I was limiting myself. What is amazing is that I spoke on this point of limits almost a year ago. So rather than remake the show, I thought to reprise it for you.
As for my 10k the question is can I run faster than 48 minutes, I will let you next week.
In meantime check out the show and consider where you are putting limits on your life.

Shortcast : Goals & Plans
Sunday Oct 09, 2022
Sunday Oct 09, 2022
Intentions Goals & Plans, last Sunday I completed a goal, I can call myself a Marathon runner.
For me, it was the day I would join a very small club. It used to be that only 1% of humanity would run a marathon, it is possible nearer 2% these days. But still, a very small slice of humanity run that distance. It was an intention that I had set for this year it is done.
I often say I don’t do goals but set intentions and I realise that is not strictly true, it is a trick that I use on myself to get me moving in direction of travel. Because sometimes goals just feel too big.
In this show, we look at my journey and how we can draw from the process
Completing the race was the goal it was more the celebration of 18 weeks of training. During that time I have run 610km, I have got my heart rate down and achieved a level of fitness like never before.
The race was the culmination of a journey in running that started 7 years ago when I first went back to the gym.
A marathon is more than just a run its 26.2 miles, it is a journey of daily running and learning how the body works under extreme conditions. It is as much about nutrition and mindset as it is about running.
Goals & Plans
My marathon went to plan for the first 17 miles up until the big hill, I was ready for it but what I was not expecting was what happened on the other side.
Pain and raw emotion.
Despite the pain and waves of emotion, I committed to run the last 1k and made it over the line in 4.35 to be greeted by friends and family. It was so good to get it done.
If there was one success factor that made all the difference, it was that I had a tried and tested plan and I followed it every day for 18 weeks.

Dai Manuel : Breaking Habits
Wednesday Jan 12, 2022
Wednesday Jan 12, 2022
When Dai Manuel first introduced himself to me, he said he was a purveyor of happiness. He certainly comes across that way now but, as with all of my guests there is a journey to be discovered.
Our conversation is about transition, it's about change, it's about living with difficult feelings and addictive behavior. We are talking about food, drink and drugs, and Dai did it all. He understands what it means to be a man seeking balance between health and connection.
For example, one of the issues many men face is how to seek connection with others without falling into unhealthy habits. For example, what do you do when the pub is where you meet your mates but alcohol addiction is a problem?
Dai is well aware of these pitfalls and opens doors for other men who face similar issues. This is the story of a man coming to terms with who he is and who he wants to be. Who knows what it takes to fully live and connect with others without pretense.
Dai has taken his life experiences and turned them into a tool to support others and models his work on five F's:
Fitness, Family, Faith, Finances and Fun.
I hope you enjoy this conversation with Dai Manuel.

Marques Ogden : The Success Cycle
Wednesday Mar 17, 2021
Wednesday Mar 17, 2021
My guest on the show is Marques Ogden, NFL Player, Entrepreneur, and in different times Keynote Speaker.
Marques had some excellent family role models in his early years and was brought up to believe anything is possible. In high school, a visiting NFL football player inspired him to work towards a dream.
Scroll down for contact details and/or links regarding this Podcast
It was his dedication to focus and hard work that won him a scholarship and a place at Howard University in Washington DC. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Finance, with an emphasis on construction and cost accounting.
But more than that, he was the first and only young man to be drafted (while at college) to the National Football League with the Jacksonville Jaguars, playing offensive lineman. The average NFL player gets 18-24 months at the professional level. Marques stayed at the professional level for 6 years, building a solid career with the Jaguars, the Baltimore Ravens, the Buffalo Bills, and the Tennessee Titans
As said, he played well beyond the average, but the body can only take so much before the injuries get serious. At 27 he hung up the helmet and padding and went to find a life as an entrepreneur.
Along with his dedication to hard work and focus, this is when the degree in construction paid off. It allowed him and his business partner to create one of the fastest-growing companies in Baltimore, Maryland, for 2010. However, rapid growth can lead to a significant fall, and that fall was deep.
Within 3 years he lost everything. His home, cars and his pride.
“I was a Millionaire in April 2012 by April 2013
I had just $400 to my name. and that was it. ”
Taking Any Job He Could Get
Playing with the NFL, Marques was on $20,000 a week; after lots of searching, the only work he could find was a custodian on the graveyard shift at $8.25/ hour.
Our conversation is the journey of his highs and lows. It takes time and dedication to get back on track and this is a beautiful story of financial rediscovery and contribution.
Today Marques has a mission to inspire accountably within people so they discover the passion and drive to get on and achieve greatness.
He is currently a Keynote Speaker, Executive Coach, Best-selling Author and Marketing Leader, helping to build others’ success.
I hope you enjoy the conversation with Marques Ogden.

Karen Darke : The Modern Day 'Alchemist
Wednesday Nov 25, 2020

Scroll down for Contact details and/or Links regarding this Podcast
I first met Karen Darke ten years ago when I was a marketing advisor on a contract with a local enterprise company. The meeting was about her book, and I was told she would be in a wheelchair. I called and made an appointment to meet at her house.
When I arrived there was no answer. Having parked on the drive, I could see the garage door was open, so I walked down the drive to see if she was around. I heard a noise behind me and there was a chirpy “hello”. I turned to see a mud-splattered woman on a low hand bike.
“Been waiting long? I’ve been out on the hills” she said, as she parked the bike in the garage and lifted herself into a waiting wheelchair.
Since that first meeting, I have followed her journey to becoming an Olympic Silver Medallist in London and then on to the Gold in Rio. Our paths crossed again this year when she was a speaker at Reasons and Results.
Karen is a modern-day ‘Alchemist’: an adventurer, athlete, speaker and author, Karen’s purpose is about inspiring and impacting, about turning challenge into an opportunity, turning ‘mud’ into ‘gold’.
Her career started as a Geologist researching gold in the Bolivian Andes; however, a life-changing accident that left her paralysed led her away from being a ‘rock-doctor’ to winning Paralympic Gold in the sport of Paralympic hand-cycling in Rio 2016.
Like all journeys, it was not a straight line.
She has experienced some extreme lows on the roller-coaster of life and knows how trauma, stress and life events can lead to fear, pain and under-performance. Karen was always the adventurer; that was what caused the accident that put her on this path.
However, she does not let her disability define or stop her desire to push the boundary of what is possible. That desire has also created some highs, exploring and extending the limits of possibility physically, mentally and emotionally. She has skied across icecaps, kayaked at extreme latitudes of the planet, and hand-cycled over the world’s biggest mountains.
The Gold in Rio was the 79th medal for Britain, and 79 being the elemental number for gold led to Karen creating Quest 79: Find Your Inner Gold.
The project had Karen cycling 7 continents in 9 iconic rides, raising £79K for Spinal Injuries and encouraging people to step out of their comfort zones and discover passion, purpose or ability: their ‘inner gold’.
Karen views life as an adventure, and she embraces all its experiences as opportunities to learn and grow.
I hope you enjoy the conversation with Karen Darke

As we come to the end of November, my US friends are about to celebrate Thanksgiving and then they will join the rest of us in the frenzy of activity and utter frustration of trying to think of a suitable gift for Great Aunt Edna, who nobody ever sees except on this one auspicious day of the year. However this year it is unlikely that Great Aunt Edna will be allowed out of the closet! At least if she lives in the UK where we have guidelines on how many households can get together for Christmas.
I am sure it was not an easy decision for those in power, knowing full well that putting Christmas on hold or restricting who and how many can meet is going to be painful. It must also be hard knowing that whatever they do will cause a surge in COVID cases in January.
The truth is Christmas will be different this year, regardless of the COVID rules. Personally, my Christmas has evolved many times with the changes in relationships, children growing up and parents or relatives passing.
Each change has meant finding new meaning and inspiration for the festive season. Having just finished an event about Spirituality, my wife and I realized we have something that could enable you to create a unique Christmas filled with empowerment to face whatever 2021 brings.
Are you ready to create a new way of celebrating Christmas? Something that can be personal to you or shared with friends and family? Something sacred and special that adds meaning to your life throughout the year ahead?
This is the “Sacred Christmas” Adventure.
Christmas doesn’t have to be about frenzied shopping, over-eating and blobbing out in front of TV watching meaningless re-runs.
How would you feel about Christmas if it were an annual opportunity to give thanks for the highs and lows of the year just gone, and reveal the wisdom you need to prepare you for whatever the year ahead throws your way.
It all starts with the sharing of our family rituals, how we put meaning into the Christmas story and how you could create your own traditions to bring deeper meaning to this festive season.

Today we are celebrating Nikki Love and her new book. “With a little touch of crazy: 63 Marathons in 63 days Adventure.”

Nikki was a guest on the podcast in March 2019. At the time we were celebrating the launch of her first book “Chasing Extraordinary” and today we celebrate the launch of the second book; With a little touch of crazy: 63 Marathons in 63 days Adventure
Back in 2019, Nikki was preparing another adventure to run across her native Australia. Alas, what with COVID that plan went on hold. However not to be daunted, she looked to run the distance on a treadmill in the garden, here in the UK.
With a Little Dash of Crazy:
The 63 Marathons in 63 Days Adventure
That adventure was going fine however after 42 days and 1040 miles on a treadmill, she snapped a tendon in her foot and the running was over for a while.
But she put the time to good use and the second book is out and released this week.
I suspect many people will agree that you need a little touch of crazy to run these distances. It takes a special mindset that is for sure. Check out the original podcast and judge for yourself. Better still buy the book.
Nikki Love & A Little Dash of Crazy
Nikki is an amazing woman who is spreading the word about exercise. Taking the message into schools all over the country. She is leading the charge to helping people understand the benefit of getting active and just get moving. The key to her success is not too run fast.
We were speaking on zoom, so I could see how windswept she looked. Before our conversation she was out running with a local school and then out on the hills with a women’s group in the sleet and rain. There is no stopping her.
It was a great conversation, about her drive and why she does what she does. We also explored her latest project which is running across Australia that will be 4000 Km in 63 days. We talk about sponsorship and how that project is structured.
I hope you enjoy the conversation with Nikki love
If you would like to connect with Nikki you can find her on Facebook on at her website Nikkilove.co.uk
As with all projects that are driven by passion and enthusiasm, this event grew out an internal inquiry…

Alex Joesph Workaholic to Behaviour Change
Could a doughnut-obsession make you thin? Depends..
Alex Joeseph is a former DJ and burned-out finance executive with an appreciation of doughnuts. She kept the doughnut bit but dumped the rest by turning her passion into a profession.
She is a woman with the capacity to commit and focus on a goal, as a high powered business executive with an ability to make stuff happen.
It was all about getting the deal done and if that meant 16 hour days and or finishing that last email while busting for a pee. That is what Alex did.
I have heard it said that man is the only animal that will trade his health to make wealth and then use his wealth to regain his health.
The long hours in banking and constant stress took their toll, and Alex reached the place of burn out. She hit bottom being a workaholic was destroying her body, her health and her relationships.
It was these feelings of helplessness that became the driving force behind her need to change.
Throughout her journey of stress and work addiction and poor health, it was her need to find a workable diet that started the journey. That interest led her to become a qualified nutritionist.
But it was more than just food, we all know what we should eat but often make poor choices. Alex went on to explore the thinking behind food choice and has become a self-confessed neuroscience geek.
Gone is the high power business executive, Alex Jospeh did the terrifying, yet exciting midlife career change.
It is her mission is to help people by showing them how to shift the weight plus see the return to health and sanity. More importantly, its about staying that way for good.
“It is all about making life simple, which is why the words behaviour change, lifestyle change and habits are key to my process.”
Her superpower is the ‘how’ and ‘why and teaching people that real success is in our mind.
I hope you enjoy the conversation with Alex Joseph.

Saturday Mar 23, 2019
Saturday Mar 23, 2019
Nikki love in 2017 she completed 63 marathons in 63 days. Since then she has run in the desert and run around Ireland. While the 63 in 63, is not an official Guinness record she is still the only women in the world to have done it.
What makes anyone want to do these distances, it has to be a drive and passion that is for sure
My relationship was never good. Twenty years ago before it was fashionable I had a cousin who used to run a lot. I thought it odd, as my resistance was forged in the terrible memories of cross-country running at school. Awful conditions always cold and wet and some of the nastiness that went with the education of the time. Thankfully that has changed.
When I came back to it to exercise in my 50s, I found that I couldn't run it hurt. It was only by going to a physio that I discovered that I had forgotten how to walk properly. I had to learn how to use my knees and ankles again. Fast forward a couple of years I was running 3K on running machines at the gym.
It was my brother who suggested we go out for a run one day when I was visiting, and I absolutely loved it, From there It was a quick jump from 3 k to nearly 10k, and I completed my first proper 10K race last September 2018.
I enjoy it, and I can understand that passion and drive that people experience. but the idea of taking on these mega distances for me is something else.
Nikki is an amazing woman who is spreading the word about exercise. Taking the message into schools and all over the country. She is leading the charge to help people understand the benefit of getting active and just moving. The key to her success is not to run fast
