Shortcast : Perfection
Sunday Oct 29, 2023
Sunday Oct 29, 2023
Perfection is an ideal that can break the soul and spirit of the best of us; getting hooked into a perfectionist state can lead to all manner of self-depreciation.
On our show today, we are looking at the mindset of perfection how chasing perfectionism can lead to shame and a sense of failure.
Where did the need to be perfect come from? It may have been sports. Watching elite athletes, there is no doubt that they are looking for the perfect performance every time they step up to the line. But they train for this moment, and much of that moment’s performance is out of their control. Of course, only the winners are celebrated; they get to take it all.
One of the biggest factors in performance thinking is the comparison with others. That is with family, friends or work colleagues. Company culture can feed the peak performance narrative, as can social media.
Part of this conversation is looking at the success model and exploring strategies that can make us aware and tackle the self-deprecation caused by perfectionism.
Do you have any thoughts about chasing perfection?

Shortcast : Being Of Service
Sunday Oct 22, 2023
Sunday Oct 22, 2023
Being of service, what does that mean to you? How do you see service, is it like any other transaction or something more?
In the interview podcasts, one of the questions is about contribution both to the world and ourselves. Our contribution to the world is about making a difference, and for most people on the show, that is their life work; it’s what they do and get paid for. It is a service, but not necessarily “giving service”.
I am the same. I’m a coach, and when I produce podcasts, it is a service because I give freely, but at the same time, it’s about getting my name out of the world so that people like yourself know that I’m available to give you support. It is a contribution, but it is not about serving freely with no strings.
In this podcast, we consider being of service, and how we serve, the thinking behind it and how the world could be a better place if service were given without it being transactional.
Being of Service
On Friday, I saw a woman struggling to move a few tonnes of recently delivered firewood; she was rushing to get it under cover before the rain hit. I stopped what I was doing and took over the wheelbarrow so she could focus on the stacking. She was so grateful. “ Thank you so much; this is what real community is about”.
My wood carrying felt good to know that I had supported her to get the fuel moved and under cover before that rain hit, and it was a good move because, boy, not 30 minutes later, it rained hard and for hours and hours.
Back to the point, being of service is a beautiful gift, but when it comes with strings, it is no longer a gift of service.

Shortcast : Singing for hope
Sunday Oct 15, 2023
Sunday Oct 15, 2023
Singing for hope and freedom was fundamental for Black African-American slaves. It gave them the resilience they needed through the darkness and was the path to emancipation.
I was in a singing workshop on Sunday with Dr Kathy Bullock, a music professor, Gospel leader, singer, performer and teacher of music from the black traditions. Over the day, we explore the early spiritual music, the songs of slavery, Gospel and African rhythms.
She is a descendant of slavery; her great-grandfather was born a slave, so the history is very close.
It has been her mission for over 30 years to bring this music and the stories it contains out to the world. Full of passion and energy, she can hold a room with 100 people or more, teach them a piece in 4-part harmony and have them singing within minutes.
Singing for Hope
It was sad, reflective and uplifting as we sang the songs written by people experiencing and living the injustice and pain of slavery and ongoing repression. These songs are about singing for hope, but it is so much more than that. It was about creating a shared vision of a better life and making it an affirmation.
Singing together is a powerful experience, and living close to the Findhorn Foundation, I consider myself privileged to live in a community where singing together in harmonies is normal and world-renowned teachers and presenters come to share their wisdom and experience with us.
The day was about the power of shared music as a means of communication, an expression of faith and resilience. This conversation is my reflection on the day and on the power of singing together. On reflection, I can see that music could be one of the tools to transcend our differences.

World Mental Health Day
Wednesday Oct 11, 2023
Wednesday Oct 11, 2023
World Mental Health Day is about raising awareness that the mind matters and that it is OK to ask for help. Much of my work is about how we take responsibility for who we are and how we present ourselves in the world.
Disclaimer: I am not a healthy professional. None of what I say should be taken as professional advice. Everything that I use or describe is based on my journey.
The most important thing I must say is If you need help, reach out and ASK.
Disclaimer aside, In this show, we explore some of the reasons why mental health is such a problem in modern living. It is the usual suspects: media, economics and money.
I was part of that world for long enough to know that the rules of the game are not about the mental health of the masses. But there are things that we can do to take care of our mental health, and that is routines and practices that support us.
In this show, we explore my path from what I would consider a low point in my life and look at the tools I used to pull myself out of my hole.
We are looking after each other.
A final note: while that day is about raising awareness, it is also about being aware of those around you. If you notice a friend or work colleague is different or quiet. Do check and ask if they are OK; reaching out can change someone’s life for the better.
Talking about this helps get people out of the cycle of the mind; getting them off the tape on repeat can make such a difference.

Shortcast : Write it or Lose it
Sunday Oct 08, 2023
Sunday Oct 08, 2023
Write it or lose it; what does that mean? In business, everything is recorded transactions, notes of meetings, etc. So why is it that in our personal life, we rarely write down our intentions?
There is a saying in business that unless something is measured, it is not managed. Without written intentions, goals or plans for our general life, we are not managing the path to them.
In this week’s shortcast, we’re exploring how the plasticity of our minds means unless we write something down, we lose it. So write it or lose it is the only way forward.
We briefly touch on journaling and secrets and gems you might find—goals, intentions, and why affirmations work.
All that is a very compact conversation

Shortcast : Catastrophising
Sunday Oct 01, 2023
Sunday Oct 01, 2023
Are you guilty of Catastrophising? We have all been there at some point; once started, it is a circle that becomes a downward spiral.
A client discussion prompted our topic this week. They are experiencing a financial gap, and it is not getting any smaller. I know it’s a problem that many people are finding where there is more month than money to go around.
Whether it was a bad day or a bad week, this particular conversation was spiralling down to the bottom of the swamp.
The problem was they had locked onto a train of thought, and the conversation was becoming tighter and tighter, about all the possible things going wrong had gone wrong this week and would go wrong next week.
I appreciate that this situation is complex and that many people are in similar problems. But what is very clear to me with a nod to Einstein.
We are never going to change a circumstance or a situation by using the same thinking that got us into that situation or circumstance.
Getting out of any fix will take fresh thinking, creative solutions and maybe even doing the unthinkable. When we Catastrophise, all of our resilience goes, and the mind locks onto the worst-case scenario.
What is needed is expansive thinking.
Some tools can help. I’ve spoken about living in the spiral many times and the work I do to keep myself moving upward. If I don’t do the work, I tend to slip downwards. So that means, for me, a daily practice, daily work on myself.
On this show, we explore the problem of catastrophising, my experience and the best solution to get out of that line of thinking.

Shortcast : The Liking Gap
Sunday Sep 24, 2023
Sunday Sep 24, 2023
What is the liking gap? Have you ever been in a conversation with a group of people, that went well, But after you start having doubts?
Some people run these conversations like a tape thinking and I wishing they hadn’t said something. Or remembering expressions on people’s faces and being convinced that they have offended them in some way.
In this podcast, we are exploring the liking gap, it is the stories and interpretations that we create in the absence of real feedback.
The standard coaching approach to this issue is to remind the client of something very important.
What other people think of me is none of my business.
It is a phrase gets pushing in personal development I’ve even used it with clients and been on the receiving end of it.
It is so true because what other people think of me, is what goes inside other people’s heads. I have absolutely no control over it. So worrying about it is not going to serve, but that doesn’t stop us worrying about it.
So I was fascinated this week to discover some work by Erica Boothby From the University of Pennsylvania. She and her team did some research in this process, looking at how we perceive that gap between what we think someone is thinking and our interpretation of it.
It is called the liking gap, and there are some simple strategies to reduce how it affects us.

Shortcast Too Much Pleasure
Sunday Sep 17, 2023
Sunday Sep 17, 2023
We live in a world where pleasure is readily available. Although seeking pleasure is a natural human tendency, the constant availability of instant gratification provided by society, businesses, and the media is causing us to become unhappy and unfulfilled.
In our last show, we explored how grit and struggle are the points in life where we experience the most growth. This week, I discovered the work of Dr. Anna Lembke, the Author of the book Dopamine.
Dr Lembke is a clinical psychologist at Stamford University and has been exploring the effect of overstimulation with Dopamine and how the brain will look to bring us back into balance. But when we are awash with stimulants, balance can mean a lack of motivation, sadness and depression.
Her work is on addiction; we all have them: food, drink, and drugs, and now there are new forms of addiction: Binge TV, Games and social media.
Through her work, it is clear that earning our dopamine is the key to real happiness.
We all know this: the win is all the more sweet when there is a struggle. So now I understand why running makes me feel good. And so many of my friends rave about cold water swimming.

Shortcast : Gratitude and Grititude
Sunday Sep 10, 2023
Sunday Sep 10, 2023
Gratitude and grititude, in life there will always be ups and downs and it’s easy to be grateful for the good bits but how could we learn appreciation for the challenges.
On this show today we look at grititude. Over the last few weeks we’ve been looking at this idea of being grateful and finding places where we can savour moments to create more gratitude.
But the truth is the maximum growth in life come when we are challenged, it arrives when we are pushed to bring out greater resources to find a path through. These are the bits that are painful and not the experience we would choose. But they are the points in life that provide the greatest opportunity for change.
Growth and Resilience
We’re exploring the idea of being grateful for the crap bits and exploring how those parts of your life will lead you towards greater resilience and a greater capacity to deal with whatever’s coming down the line.
Many of our guests on the podcast experience a fall of some kind. Some of them have lost everything in their lives, and they have created something genuinely extraordinary out of that disaster. When asked if they would go back and change anything, they often say no.
That is what we’re talking about. It’s that capacity to recognise those parts of their lives and see them as opportunities for growth. Because as long as we hold fear of the gritty bits, we lose our capacity to change anything. Only when we can truly embrace them do we achieve full resilience and the ability to react or whatever life delivers.

Shortcast : Learning to Savour
Sunday Sep 03, 2023
Sunday Sep 03, 2023
Learning to savour is about looking for those parts of the day worth remembering and paying attention with heightened awareness.
In our last shortcast, we looked at gratitude, the simple act of being thankful for what has passed during the day. In this show, we explore the practice of savouring—a process of heightened awareness where we slow down and give all of our attention to the moment.
The point of savouring is to appreciate moments of magic and wonder that happen during the day. It is about creating opportunities that give us reason to be grateful later.
We are biologically programmed to look for the problems, crises, or threats to our existence. To the point where we will pass by the beauty and wonder of the ordinary.
In this show we explore my experience with savouring and how you could use it to enrich your daily experience.

Sunday Aug 27, 2023
Have you considered the power of gratitude?
It is easy to fall into the trap or the spiral we all have stuff going on and it can be hard to see the positive in every situation. However there is always something worthy of our thanks and gratitude.
On this show we are exploring how gratitude can change the mood and lift the soul in any circumstance.
There are many ways to approach a gratitude practice: last thing at night, first thing in the morning or in the moment when something has not turned out well.

Shortcast : Community Building
Sunday Aug 20, 2023
Sunday Aug 20, 2023
The power of community building, our communities are the social glue that holds life together and is so underrated. Only when we cut off, do we notice the gap and then the loss.
The podcast explores why community is essential, what happens when a community is broken, and why it is fundamental to human existence. Community is about the groups of people we identify with and support.
The word community is a word that is used often in business and in politics but what does it mean? In the news, we often hear that that’s that phrase from the business community or the wider community.
Are you consciously community building?
We all make assumptions that we live in a community and yet the description of what that means is actually very loose. Could you put a name or word to yours?
However, take your community access away and see what happens. Covid was a catalyst that both created and destroyed our communities. While it was not possible to meet in person, people stepped up and helped each other with food or shopping. However, that separation from our usual groups took its toll on so many.
Change is Coming
On Friday I was invited to a private viewing of a film set in the Findhorn Foundation. It is a well-established spiritual and ecovillage community. Brexit, Covid and then an arson attack have made the holding organisation insolvent, and huge change is coming. The film explored how difficult the journey has been, and opened the conversation about what is to come. I am on the perimeter of these changes and I am sure I will get to witness the best and the most difficult aspect of community leadership and decision-making as this story unfolds.
But it has made me think about my community and how I need to be more consciously building a network around me.
In this programme, I invite you to look at your circles and groups and how can you make them stronger. As Stephen Covey said we need to make time to sharpen the saw.

Shortcast : Be A Creator
Sunday Aug 13, 2023
Sunday Aug 13, 2023
Be a creator. Are you a creator or a consumer? What is the balance in your life between consumption and creation? It is not easy society is all about consumption. At first, it was things, and now it is information.
In this show, we are looking at the balance between what we consume and what we produce and how a little creativity could change your life.
I was chatting about media consumption with my son. Now he is of the digital generation, where his phone constantly provides news, entertainment or background music. He is either programming games or playing them when he is not on the phone. That is his chosen path and career so not just a care free or fruitless pastime.
While conceding there was a lot of consuming, he pointed out that gaming is an interactive, social, and creative activity. Watching him play some of his team games, they do require a full range of interactive skills and a level of creativity.
My point on this show is not the right of wrongs of gaming, but the expression of creativity has a more significant positive effect on our well-being than solo consumption.
I suspect while there is creativity in the gaming world, I feel there is more creativity in the shared experience with his playing companions.
Community and being is groups, I was singing this morning at the Park in Findhorn; there is something so magical when 40 people come together to sing in harmony. The creativity is in the shared sound and the community that it builds is way beyond listing to Spotify.
How can you be a creator?
When was the last time you picked up a pen or some colours and painted or did a drawing? There is something very soothing about creating patterns on a page and then adding some colour. Have you ever wondered why adult colouring books are so popular?
On this show, I mentioned Andrea Nelson’s Art. You can find her here on YouTube
https://www.instagram.com/andrea.nelson.art/
Her little videos are a great inspiration; they are short.

Shortcast : Time to Shift
Sunday Aug 06, 2023
Sunday Aug 06, 2023
It is your time to shift, when you put down a marker and decided everything will be different hereafter.
On the show, we explore the idea of the shift through the window of my wife’s ordination as an interfaith minister. Two weeks ago on Saturday in a little theatre in Milton Keynes, 30 plus ordinands were publicly declaring their vows in front of family and friends.
It was a deeply moving ceremony about love and compassion. An opportunity for these people to be recognised and seen for who they are, where they have come from and what they might become.
This was their moment of shift and joy to behold it had the sense of a wedding but different, and words are so limiting when it comes to describing any of it.
Life Is Not Measured By the Number of Breaths We Take,
But By the Moments That Take Our Breath Away. Vicki Corona,
That quote sums it up very well but even that is describing a moment and not saying what the feeling is. Very possibly because words cannot express.
In this show, we explore that event and how to go about finding a shift for yourself. What tools we can use to get to the point of shift and onward to the life that you want.
My Wife is now Reverend Cheryl Harvey and I am delighted for her.

Shortcast : Reading by Osmosis
Sunday Jul 30, 2023
Sunday Jul 30, 2023
Reading by osmosis is buying a book and having it on the shelf unread. It feels good to buy a book that looks like it will change your life. But unless we read it and implement the contents, nothing will change.
We all do it to some extent, PDF downloads!! How many do you have in that to-be-read folder? Courses bought or events attended, did you do the work?
On this show, we are looking at how to avoid reading by osmosis and setting a commitment to do the work. I have a lot of books on my shelves I have a lot of books in my Kindle, I have always enjoyed reading, and was the influence of various coaches over the years that have either suggested books. Or pointed out that the most successful people read a lot of books.
But we live in a world of reels and short-form content. The availability of podcasts and YouTube videos has changed how we consume or find information. These platforms have given us direct access to information and reduced our need to look for or read books.
Is that really true, can I get everything from Youtube?
It’s ok if I’m looking for a particular bit of information, like how to tune the gears on your bike. A straightforward video is enough.
But the problem is when we try to go deeper unless we are taking notes or finding some way to retain that information, watching videos or listening to information is not the best way to learn or implement.
On this show, I will encourage you to find the book that will take you forward and give you some tools that help you stick to and implement something.
Because unless we take action and change something nothing will change.
Join me on the show and discover how you might implement the book that could change your life.
