Independence : Shortcast
Sunday Jul 04, 2021
Sunday Jul 04, 2021
With it being 4th July there can really only be one topic of conversation; the exploration of Independence and what it means.
Whilst today is the day America celebrates it’s independence from the UK, it is also the day my wife and I moved in together and began our exploration of interdependence. So my thoughts naturally turn to what that means to us as a couple, what it means in relationship to raising children and living in community with others. In this context, communal living can mean the local communities we create with friends and family or the larger community created as a nation.
There are several aspects to explore here:
Dependence, Independence, Co-dependence and Interdependence.
What is the difference between them? How do we create a balance that healthily supports each individual to flourish and contribute their best to the whole? I hope you will join me as I share my personal thoughts on this. I also invite you to continue your own exploration with the following questions:
- Where do you express independence?
- Where are you dependent on others?
- Do you have any co-dependent relationships?
- Where could you allow more interdependence into your life?

Struggle & Flow : Shortcast
Sunday Jun 20, 2021
Sunday Jun 20, 2021
I woke up this morning with thoughts about achievement, struggle and flow.
These thoughts were prompted by a conversation earlier in the week with someone who is currently caught in struggle. I was reflecting on what that was about for them and more generally why we sometimes choose to stay with the struggle and why other times we refuse to.
It seems that there are some people, for whom life always seems to flow, whereas for others it seems to be a perpetual struggle. What is that all about. Here are my current thoughts on it.

The Power of Coincidence : Shortcast
Sunday Jun 13, 2021
Sunday Jun 13, 2021
This weeks thoughts are prompted by a podcast interview with one of my guests who has strong Christian beliefs and is in regular communication with (what for her is) God. She runs her entire life based on the guidance she receives and it clearly works.
Some might say this is just coincidence. I personally believe it is something more. In fact ‘coincidence’ is such a regular part of my life that I am rarely fazed by it and have almost come to expect it. I don’t call this God, but for me it is still feels like the guiding hand of unseen help.
I know many people who connect with an unseen force and have different ways of explaining it. Our Spirit-duality event significantly highlighted this for me and more recently I am reading Perry Marshall’s latest book and discovering a lot of people are working directly with what they call ‘Memos From Head Office. It’s a fascinating subject, and yet it is still rarely openly talked about.
How does coincidence figure in your life? Do you call it God, or something else?

No Bad Days : Shortcast
Sunday Jun 06, 2021
Sunday Jun 06, 2021
How would you like to be in an elite group?
Have you considered that you already are?
This is one of the considerations in today’s shortcast about Bad Days. Those days when nothing seems to go well, are all a matter of perspective. What is your viewpoint on this? What makes a day good or bad for you?

If you follow the podcast, you may be aware of my return to exercise in my 50’s and how I use it as a measure of moving beyond personal limits. This week is a celebration of my most recent running achievement and a reflection on how a lot of the limits we impose are self created, and therefore unreal.

Contribution
Sunday May 23, 2021
Sunday May 23, 2021
This week’s topic is Contribution. It is one of the 5 questions I ask my podcast guests, and has historically been about what we contribute to the world, which I believe is a very valuable thing to explore. But more recently (particularly since Covid) the question has expanded to also consider how we contribute to ourselves.
Anyone who travels will be familiar with the airlines safety precaution about putting your own oxygen mask on first, well the same applies in all areas of life: physical, emotional and spiritual. If we don’t take care of ourselves we cannot give our best to others.
In this conversation I share the values of ‘self’ contribution and how I have incorporated it into my daily routine. One of the valuable things I do daily is called ‘Renaissance Time’ and comes from some work I recently did with Perry Marshall. Another comes out of the work my wife and I have been doing to develop The Five Questions. It is an exercise we include in the eBook which I am discovering to be a very powerful in my own life.
How are you taking care of yourself? How are you contributing to yourself on a daily basis? I hope this shortcast gives you some food for thought and supports you in making time for THE one thing that is your most valuable contribution to the world. And that is YOU.

Consciousness & Presence
Monday May 17, 2021
Monday May 17, 2021
Today’s topic stems from my meditation practice on Monday where my Monkey Mind was exploring every possibility to break the meditation process and draw me away from my focus. But why is this relevant?
Because it got me thinking about what it means to be Conscious and Present with who we are, where we are and why that is so important. To me it is all about the wider exploration of what it means to be living this life and about who is Paul Harvey?
Is Paul Harvey the body or is Paul Harvey something else?
In this episode I am exploring the concept of mindfulness and the values that can be found when we stay present and in relationship with who we are.

The Gap Between Learning & Doing
Monday May 10, 2021
Monday May 10, 2021
Prompted by an interesting comment on LinkedIn, this week’s conversation is about the gap between learning and doing.
The comment, posted with a tongue in cheek smile is by Susan Payton asking: “Are there any courses out there on how to stop buying courses?” There are naturally some fun flippant answers including my own. But it did get me thinking, because this is a common problem a lot of us come upon.
Chasing the Shiny Object
The reason many of us jump from one course to another is about chasing the elusive shiny object. This is a trap entrepreneurs often fall into.
It regularly occurs when we are following a course with a strategy and hit against something that stops us moving forward. Then along comes another course that catches our attention and promises a better solution. It may offer a simple shortcut that enables us to bypass the thing we are avoiding. So we follow that direction for a while until we hit against something else we’d rather avoid.
Another aspect of chasing courses is due to ‘imposter syndrome’. This is that niggling feeling that we are not good enough or we are missing a vital piece of information that will give us the confidence to believe what others see in us. In other words, by doing this ‘new course’ we will have all the answers and will be able to own our authority on the subject.
Chasing courses in this way is just the busyness of feeling we are making progress. When what is actually happening is we are standing still.
The chances are, that if we are willing to be really honest with ourselves we know what needs doing to move forward, we just don’t want to face it. What is often lacking is the support and motivation to get us passed the blocks and into new territory. Sometimes all we need is the right incentive, like the one I had to get my tax done. Or the one my mentor came up with that involved burning money to get his book written on time.
Solutions For Success
The LinkedIn post started the conversation with my wife about resistance and what gets in the way. It got us thinking about the coaching solutions that support people to move forward. From there the conversation transitioned into the value of rewards and celebrating successes, and resulted in the creation of four new Life Passion & Business Focus Coaching packages.
Focus Coaching bridges the gap between learning and doing by driving you through the challenges. We have added an incentive to celebrate the successes that take you closer to your goal, and rewards for meeting targets on time.

De-commit to Commit
Sunday May 02, 2021
Sunday May 02, 2021
De-commit to Commit is a conversation about goal setting, the tools for goal setting and some important considerations about de-commitment that came out of a conversation with my accountability partner.
I have a weekly commitment partnership that has been going for over 18 months. We help keep each other on track with our short term goals whilst holding the bigger perspective for our long term goal. I highly recommend it as an effective way of staying focused.
Our conversation came around to Goal Mapping, a technique created and developed my Brian Mayne (see below). My accountability partner found the map they had created 18 months ago and discovered that many of the things on it had come to pass. This prompted me to reflect on the achievements with my own Goal Map.
When I created my map in 2019, I said that by August 2020 I would be Podcasting full time. I also included an income figure and various other actions I said I would achieve. The interesting thing is the way it all came to pass, something I could not have predicted back then. The other interesting fact is what has been holding me back.
Letting Go To Move Forward
This is something that has taken me a long time to release. But it is only in doing so that I can truly commit to the new direction I want to take. In this conversation I share my experience and explore what we hold on to and why. I invite you to look what you may need to de-commit from to move forward in your own life.

The Importance of Values
Sunday Apr 25, 2021
Sunday Apr 25, 2021
Today’s Shortcast explores the reason why Values are important and how to find your own core values.
On talking to a podcast guest this week about values, we discussed how it leads to dissonance and discomfort when they are not being fulfilled. Our conversation was about the working environment, but it applies to every aspect of life.
I know many people who have started working for an organization because it represented something for them. Then somewhere down the line the values they thought the organization represented are no longer true. This can be something discovered early on, or several years down the line. We also see this played out in the media and politics, where a company or person is found out to be doing something that goes against the values people thought they represented.
Why It Is Important To Know Your Values
Values are an integral part of the choices we make, in the way we live our lives and who we associate with and yet we rarely consciously list them. One advantage of clearly defining your values is that it helps you make critical choices or resolve complex issues where a decision is required. For example, when choosing a new job, partner, role or life direction.
In the shortcast I offer some suggestions to help you ascertain your values and narrow them down to a set of core values that will give you a solid grounding. This is useful as a personal exercise, and is a particularly valuable resource for businesses. Ascertaining your values in business helps in choosing employees and in marketing and promoting your brand.

Can You Help With My Podcast Research?
So what are the conversations I am having about podcasts? Well, the aim is to explore how to move Life Passion & Business to the next level, and for this I need your help. There are two options…
Option One:
The written survey will give me valuable information on what listeners enjoy and what inspires you. It’s anonymous and just a handful of multiple choice questions with space to add comments if you wish.
Survey Link: https://cutt.ly/Gxg5AiS
However, there is nothing better than a good conversation and an opportunity to get to know you better. So my preference is…
Option Two:
To have a one to one chat on Zoom. This would be a 15 minute informal chat about your listening choices and what you think makes a good podcast. It’s quick and easy to book, and you choose a time and date that suits you.

Looking Back To Look Forward
Sunday Apr 18, 2021
Sunday Apr 18, 2021
Today’s shortcast is about looking back to look forward. It came about through conversations with my podcast guests. One in particular who took off and travelled about 40 years in a few moments. I realised there was a back story that I wanted to explore, so I asked ‘What did you want to do when you grew up?’ Or ‘What is it you wanted to be when you got big?’
Looking Back As Information For the Present
It is this re-phrasing that conjures a bit of magic I see it land on my guests in our Zoom conversations.
What did you want to be when you got big? You might find it interesting to consider how it has affected or influenced the life you now lead.
Some of the interests I have carried with me from my youth are acting and sustainability. This would account for the excitement that landed in my waking moments this morning.
Looking Back From The Future
As I mention at the beginning of today’s shortcast, we have a new event! Like previous ones, it landed out of the blue, as morning inspiration. It comes out of something I have been struggling with for a while which is…
Where are the positive narratives, stories, films and role models for the future we desire?
The trend is to focus on dystopia, the things we want to avoid, but those stories end at the beginning. I want to take it further and explore how we can hold a vision of the future as a living affirmation in our current thinking.
So back to this morning’s inspiration…
As Scotland is hosting the next International Climate Change Conference in November, the idea of creating an event about Sustainable Living has been ruminating for a while. However, this morning it took root with an idea to set it in the future.
The plan is to present the event as though we are already living in the future we desire. As though we are reflecting back on how we got there. In the same way that affirmations work by saying ‘I Am’ rather than ‘I Will or I Want’, I will be asking my speakers to rise to the challenge of presenting their ideas as though they have already achieved the outcome they desire.
Be Part Of The Bigger Picture
The intention behind this Event is to create a new narrative where everyone, (speakers and participants), is invited to step into a more creative exploration of what we already know is possible. What is required, is the vision and the courage to step beyond our current limiting beliefs. It will be interesting to see what comes of this.
Check out the details on our EVENTS page. When you register your interest there is an opportunity to share your vision and what you would like to see included from our speakers.
I look forward to sharing this exploration with you.

I'm So Excited
Sunday Apr 11, 2021
Sunday Apr 11, 2021
Whilst shopping I noticed the in-congruence of seeing a lone adult pushing one of those child sized shopping carts loaded to capacity with groceries. It became apparent why when an exuberant 4-5 year old came running up the isle full of excitement about being bought a packet of biscuits by the other (as yet unseen) adult with them.
This sheer joy over a packet of biscuits is something we rarely experience as adults.
Although, it may not be a packet of biscuits that does it for us, there are still some equally joyous moments to be experienced that we often let slip by without fully appreciating.
So on that note, I am sharing with you what I’m so excited about this week, the special gift my wife and I have joyfully created for you.
I’m so excited to launch the newly updated Five Questions eBook and Worksheets

It finally completed and ready to be shared with you, and the reason it’s so exciting is because it is our combined passion and life experiences that have been poured into it and the vision that it can support others in reconnecting with moments of passion in their life.
And, as if that wasn’t enough on it’s own, the extra special offer that we are sharing to celebrate it’s launch is the gift of One Month’s Free Access to 3 event sessions from any one of our currently available Virtual Events.
Follow this link for full details:

That’s it from me. I hope you enjoy our gift and that you find some equally joyous moments to celebrate this week.

This week’s topic is about that well known phrase “Living the Dream” and it has come about because of a conversation with a shop assistant earlier this week.
As it is always my way to open conversations, I asked this young assistant “how is your day going” and she replied with “Oh yeah, living the dream” in a sarcastic sort of way. Ignoring the sarcasm I continued with “do you genuinely mean that” and she looked at me as though I’d just done something inappropriate.
As we were coming to the end of the transaction I left her by gently suggesting “maybe you need to look at that and do something about it”. But this conversation has stuck with me all week and that is why I am bringing the question up here.

On The Bus With You?
Monday Mar 29, 2021
Monday Mar 29, 2021
Is it on the bus with you, or are you traveling towards it?
What I am talking about is your passion and your happiness.
Gordon Mullan is one of the people who has taken up my request to discuss podcasts (more on that below) and what makes some stand out from others.
Gordon is a specialist on live events, he hosts events and trains speakers to use virtual technology so this was a very helpful conversation for me. One of the things he brought up is when people are looking outside of themselves (“I will be happy when…”) then internal contentment is difficult to find.
This brings me to Gratitude. It is the key to finding that inner happiness that enables us to achieve those elusive goals with greater ease. Getting on board with gratitude brings you closer to inner happiness and reigniting your passion and purpose.
On the bus with you is a conversation about this idea that when we seek what is outside of us the path to happiness will always be elusive.

Saying No To Move Forward
Sunday Mar 14, 2021
Sunday Mar 14, 2021
How often do you say no?
We all like to be helpful, so saying no can often be difficult, especially when a friend asks a favour.
However, sometimes No is a necessity, especially when someone else would be better suited to the task, and saying Yes would be just another distraction that would take us away from achieving our goals.
This is a Sunday Reflection Shortcast from your podcast host Paul Harvey.
