Working Towards Accountability and Trust
Monday Mar 18, 2024
Monday Mar 18, 2024
Welcome to the latest bite-sized episode of Life, Passion, and Business with your host, midlife coach Paul Harvey. In today's reflection, we delve deep into one of the most pivotal aspects of life - Commitments. We seek to understand how we condition ourselves to meet or break commitments and explore potential routes toward greater personal accountability.
In connection to coaching, we gauge the degree of commitment to desired actions on a numerical scale, which ultimately is a reflection of the energy we're willing to put in to accomplish the goal. The struggle comes when we fail to meet these commitments. The idea is not to harshly chide ourselves, but to seek a rational path through to get things done.
While discussing commitment, we touch on the importance of managing promises made to children, who are yet to understand the intricacies of promise-breaking. The key lies in being conscious of the promises we make and ensuring not to create an environment of broken trust, particularly with children.
The conversation evolves to discuss types of people who meet their commitments at all costs, and others who struggle to do so. Both extremes can lead to instances of ridicule, and somewhere amidst this, we aim to tread the middle path where it's acceptable to relish successes but also come to terms with difficulties encountered.
When we don't meet our commitments, it's essential we maintain honesty with ourselves and inform those affected in good time - it serves the dual purpose of respecting their requirements and affirming our integrity. Particularly when we break internal commitments, it impacts our trust in ourselves, causing us to question our capabilities.
The solution lies in setting micro-commitments, enabling us to gradually build faith in our abilities without overwhelming ourselves. Repeated successful completion of these commitments reinstates our internal trust, proving we're capable of meeting and being accountable to self-set goals.
This enlightening discussion attempts to shed light on commitment, accountability, self-trust in the context of personal evolution, and the journey toward self-improvement. If these reflections resonate or if you've found this episode insightful, kindly share it with a friend, as that's how we grow our versatile and inspiring community.

Experience an enlightening and thought-provoking dialogue that explores our daily struggles in decision-making, from the seemingly simple, like suffering from menu anxiety at a restaurant, to the more complex decisions that shape our lives.
Dive deep into the concept of choice overload and decision fatigue and how this impacts our ability to make meaningful decisions. In an age of infinite choices, Paul takes a reflective journey, exploring the importance of committing to decisions, understanding the consequences, and navigating the anxieties associated with this process. The podcast addresses the various factors that influence our decision-making abilities, including past experiences, a desire to please, and fear.
Beyond highlighting the complications, the conversation also uncovers various tips and tools for better decision-making. Discover how high achievers manage their decisions and how a simple act of consistency, like wearing the same clothes, can ease decision fatigue. Learn how to achieve balance in the ten fundamental areas of life and unravel the critical role that faith, not necessarily religious, plays in bolstering our confidence in making the right choices.
Finally, we understand the power of reframing difficult decisions from a place of joy, the benefits of relying on logical reasoning, and the strength inherent in trusting our hearts. Shortcast : Reaction or Response
Sunday Mar 03, 2024
Sunday Mar 03, 2024
Reaction or response: I opened the car door, and the harsh words were out of my mouth before I knew it. His response was just as intense as mine. Did I get out of the car?
On this show, we are talking about reaction or response. The course of life is a flow with ups and downs, situations, problems, and solutions. Now, we can live, breathe and move with the flow or fight against it.
But, of course, that is more challenging than it sounds. Living with ease and flow takes some practice, but if we can respond with clear, fresh thinking, love, compassion and ease. The depth of any problem with an emotional charge is significantly reduced.
So, how do you react to life’s ups and downs? Do you give a measured response, or do you react, and how deep is that reaction measured, or do you go full nuclear?
There are people in life with short fuses; thankfully, I don’t meet so many of them these days.
The situation above was an overreaction of mine in a petrol station to a driver who had pushed into the queue for fuel. It was not my finest hour, that’s for sure. Had it not been for my wife’s calming words and touch, I may have got out of the car, and life may have taken a different turn.
Do You React or Respond
In this show, we look at the reaction or response and how we might choose a response over a reaction. We also consider the impact of reaction in other areas like social media. Out of interest, have you ever had a change of mind or opinion following a tense interaction on a social media post?
That is the point: reaction might win the battle but rarely changes minds.

Michael Harvey : Story Myth and Magic
Wednesday Feb 21, 2024
Wednesday Feb 21, 2024
I am on a project for next week, so I thought I would reshare this episode from January 2022 with Michael Harvey, a storyteller. His journey into the profession is interesting, but more than that, our conversation is about the fundamental need for stories in our lives.
On the show, I mention Focus coaching and tools to get you moving.
The link to focus Coaching is here. Do book a free call; it will move you forward.

Michael Harvey : Story Myth and Magic
I believe that story is a fundamental part of who we are; our story gives life its meaning. But there is more; through sharing stories, we find resonance with others, and we build community bonds and stronger friendships. However, the digital world has commoditised it, and stories from music, film and social media surround us. To some extent, we have lost the art of the shared narrative.
If there is one thing that all of the top entrepreneurs have in common, it is the ability to bring people together under a shared narrative. A story of how life could be better if…
With all of that in mind, I am excited to bring you today’s guest, Michael Harvey (no relation), a professional storyteller.
As you will hear in this show, his vocation found him. You will discover the difference between performance and storytelling: how a well-told story creates the illusion of time stopping. Our conversation covers his journey through myth and magic, and we touch on archetypes like the ‘Hero’s Journey’. Michael also introduces us to the Mabinogion, a Welsh tale of lust and war from the Middle Ages.

Shortcast : Empathic Distress
Sunday Feb 18, 2024
Sunday Feb 18, 2024
Emphatic distress, what does that mean? It was a new phrase for me. It is the term that describes the overwhelm that so many people in modern life experience.
We were never meant to be this connected to world events and things where we have zero power of influence. I have to thank the universe for the article in the Guardian newspaper by Nadine Levy that explored the topic.
I got here because there has been a theme this week. I have been working with several people who were struggling with focus. But they found it impossible to stick to the main topic at hand and looked to see if it was possible to eat the whole elephant.
This podcast discusses the impact of working towards a big goal and how empathic distress can detract from the task at hand.
We are considering some options you might use to move through it. It is about breaking the pattern; that is breathing, a big, deep belly breath.
Other options are to set a low bar, forgiveness and kindness. If any of these topics touch you and you need support, reach out and find it because you are not alone.
These powerful tools are part of the kit in focus coaching. If you have a project or something that you want to change or are finding some resistance check out this video.

Shortcast : Finding Focus
Sunday Feb 11, 2024
Sunday Feb 11, 2024
Finding focus is the key to getting stuff done. But how do we do that in a society that has created a distracted industry? Because your phones have given you instant access to everything, and we live in a 24/7 society.
It has never been so difficult to isolate ourselves from those things that would have us blow off and fritter our time. In this podcast, we explore the problem and offer some solutions to that could see you getting stuff done.
Finding Focus is not easy.
Why is that? It is because our media is cultivating a distraction-based society. I can remember 50 years ago, sitting in my room doing my homework. The option for distraction was limited; perhaps I could read a book or doodles. But if I wanted to get out and see friends or watch TV with the family. The homework had to be finished.
The fact is our average attention span has been dropping. It is now around 47 seconds, and we can see this in how a film or drama series are cut. We can see this in the success of YouTube shorts and Tick-Tok reels.
Boring Stuff is hard to do.
When the work is boring or has the potential to trigger us into states of fear or worry, it is not surprising that we look for some distraction.
In this podcast, we look at the problems. We will consider the importance of managing our energy and use feelings and emotions to motivate us to finish the work. One of those tools is accountability; one of the keys to my homework completion all those years ago was accountability to those around me.
These powerful tools are part of the kit in focus coaching. If you have a project or something that you want to change or are finding some resistance check out this video.

John Leister : Its Never Too Late
Wednesday Feb 07, 2024
Wednesday Feb 07, 2024
It’s never too late to discover your passion and inspiration. Is finding a path that works even after years of effort is possible?
My guest on this show was always creative, enjoying writing and acting, and life could have been different were it not for a debilitating skin condition. It took away his self-confidence and, with it, his dreams of acting, performing and writing.
Today, John Leister is a prolific self-published writer, excited by the possibility that every story is a new adventure. John was born in the 1960s and lives in Vancouver, Canada; from his early years, he always thought he would be in the creative industry. As a child, it was all about comics and drawing for hours.
His early education and work were uneventful, and while he thought that he could make his mark in the creative industry, it was not something he chose to follow.
In his early 20s, he walked past a drama school, went in out of interest and started acting classes. His writing talent was discovered here, and he started the journey towards an acting career. He had an agent and was attending auditions; he was an extra on a number of movies.
However, the acting life is tough, and you must be strong of mind and heart to take the slings and arrows of rejection. This was not easy for John, and it manifested into a skin condition called psoriasis, effectively ending his performance career.
It is never too late.
John has been a security guard for 35 years, and his writing has been his saviour, creating character and alter egos of himself. It took him years to publish these short stories, and in 2019 did it.
Our conversation is about that story, how he stepped out of his own limitations and became a published author. John is not your classic success tale. He is living life on his terms, at peace with his journey, and is content with where life is heading.
To find John’s books, check out the links below.

Shortcasts: Are you feeling it?
Sunday Feb 04, 2024
Sunday Feb 04, 2024
The question today is, are you feeling it? Our feelings have enormous power over our daily lives, and yet, for the most part, we are blissfully unaware that they are guiding our actions.
On this show, we are considering the power that feeling has over us, how feelings have more impact on our daily lives than we realise, and how we might harness that power to take us forward.
Are you feeling it? Physical Or Emotional.
We know physical feelings, pain, pleasure, hunger and thirst. These feelings trigger or motivate us to action that leads to a situation change. Emotional feelings can be the same and yet have no physical trigger. We are the trigger or more the point; our interpretation of the situation is the trigger.
Most of the reactive feelings we experience are responses to a situation filtered through memory or past experience. For example, if you were to meet someone for the first time and their voice triggered a painful experience from the past. It might make you cautious or less interested in the conversation.
Fears and phobias can often be traumatic past events being relived in the present.
While all of the sounds unpleasant, there is an upside. Actors use these techniques to give great emotional performances that are believable and look real. We can use these tools to project forward and create events and feelings around those events or goals we want to happen. Then, use those feelings as motivation to get there.
Check out the show to see how you can play with feelings and create your desired life.

Shortcast : Thought and Belief
Sunday Jan 28, 2024
Sunday Jan 28, 2024
Thought and belief or beliefs and thought, what comes first, that would be the thought obviously it has to come first for one to believe it, but the question is how do we get to believe and is it important?
LINKS TO THE MONEY EXPERIMENT BELOW.
In this show, we are looking at the connection between thought and belief.
We have thousands of thoughts every day, many of which just pass through our minds without any connection or associated feeling.
Most of my work with people revolves around mindfulness or being conscious of things passing through our minds and being the observer.
When I do this, it can be surprising what passes through. We've spoken many times on this subject, particularly around the idea of how we perceive ourselves and how we value ourselves and those around us.
Unless I value myself and hold myself in high esteem, I will always sell myself short.
That is tangible proof of the connection between thought and belief. I have to believe a thought to make it real.
Have you ever played the power game, it is an acting exercise and I explore it in this show. This point is, through a series of exercises, big guys got pushed over just by the power of the words that were used.
My point is that we say, and the words we say to ourselves, have power over us. When we say negative things about ourselves we are giving ourselves that instruction. If we say positive things about ourselves, we are giving ourselves that instruction.
So, what do you want to achieve in your life this year? Do you believe you can achieve it, and are you committing to it?
I know from coaching and being reminded in the money program that there are several ways of achieving things, and there is an easy way and there is a hard way.
My sense on this is that the universe ( and our minds) will give us what we want on some level; if we believe something, it is going to be hard, it will be hard; if we believe, something will flow, then it will flow because we get kind of what we expect.
The Challenge for all of us is to map out what we want and believe we can have it and then take action to move towards it.
Now those actions will involve smart goals, they will involve accountability and all the sort of things to make something happen. But the key to remember here is bashing our heads against the wall for something is not the solution to the problem find a way around the wall.
If you want help with that you know where I am.
Now, speaking of big ideas and beliefs.

Shortcast : Self-talk
Sunday Jan 21, 2024
Sunday Jan 21, 2024
We all experience self-talk in one situation or another. Sometimes, it is easy to ignore; at other times, it is not. How do you counter your inner critic?
In this show, we explore self-talk and inner dialogues or narratives, where they come from and what strategies you can use to minimise the impact.
I am in week three of the money experiment last week I explored my inner GPS or compass. It is about being the observer in life and watching, seeing what feels light or dark. I noticed that I was crap-talking myself, and I thought I was past all that.
It is amazing how unkind we can be to ourselves, and we are often not even aware that we are doing it. Negative self-talk is the subconscious mind trying to protect us, using powerful characters from our past. It is looking for options to stop your progress as it perceives a threat.
My inner voice is often my own, but it can be my mother or other significant people from the last 50-plus years. While observing myself this week, I noticed that there is quite a narrative going on at different times. Some of it is positive, and sometimes it is just unhelpful.
In this show, we explore some of the solutions that I use to counter this inner critic. From simple mindful thinking to having a dialogue with the voice.
The bigger point here is awareness. When we are aware, we can take action and make a change. Part of the process this week was looking for lightness and fun, as that is where all sorts of magic can happen.
But first, we need to silence the decent.

Jessica Coulthard : The Strategic Interventionist
Wednesday Jan 17, 2024
Wednesday Jan 17, 2024
With other projects taking priority over editing this week, I thought to share this recording from 2021. Jessica is bubbly and full of energy. It is a great show, and she poses some interesting questions about excuses...
The Money Experiment
I know I keep reminding you, but this stuff is more important than ever; I have done two shows with my thoughts: Money Bags and Thought and Money.
Check them out and or follow the money experiment link. it is about changing our relationship with the energy of money. That relationship with money is why lottery winners nearly always end up back where they started.
Promo Over Enjoy the show
Today my guest on the show is a fellow podcast host. Jessica Coulthard of the “Ignited Entrepreneurs Podcast” went all in recording and uploading more than 100 shows in just over a year. And get this, podcasting is her side hustle, she has a full-time role as a project coordinator.
Our conversation is a tale about the power of podcasting, coaching and personal development.
In 2015, Jessica had an epiphany; she realized she was writing down the same goals that she wrote down every January, and her life wasn’t changing. That moment was the moment of realizing that she was choosing to keep herself small, and it started her on the path to changing her life.
She discovered Jack Canfield’s book “The Success Principles™, and then it was time for the hard questions and her journey towards the life she wanted.
Our conversation is about Jessica’s journey of self-discovery, moving from a quiet introvert to becoming a woman with a voice of her own. It is about finding her place in the world and who she was here to serve.
In 2019, Jessica hosted a live event called “The Women Who Inspire Conference” 2019 and went on to become the host of the Ignited Entrepreneurs Podcast.
Jessica Coulthard defines herself as a Strategic Interventionist; she uses NLP techniques to dig deep into her clients’ unconscious and works with them to understand their driving needs, core values and motivations to facilitate rapid change!

Shortcast : You Are Amazing
Sunday Jan 14, 2024
Sunday Jan 14, 2024
You are amazing; we all are. But more than that, you are amazing at something; we are talking about your superpower on this show.
Do you ever take the time to consider what you're good at because there is something in your life that you do now that where you are better than most. However, in our society, we encourage children and people in employment to get better at their weaknesses. We ask people to focus on the bit that makes their life suck so they can get better.
When I feel bad about something, it does not make me perform at my best.
My conversation today is about dropping our focus on our bad bits because they will never make us happy, and even if we were to try really hard, we would never get better than average.
In this podcast, I'm encouraging you to explore your superpowers and enjoy them, and when you are looking to explore something new or discover something new, go into it without an expectation to be good and do it for fun.
When there is fun, all sorts of magic can happen.

Shortcast : Intuition & Inspiration
Sunday Jan 07, 2024
Sunday Jan 07, 2024
Intuition and inspiration: where does that sit in your New Year’s resolutions, goals, or intentions that you set for 2024? There is so much pressure to set intentions or goals at the beginning of the year.
I suspect many people feel pressured into coming up with something, and it’s invariably dumped by the middle of January. Why is it so difficult to set a meaningful, achievable goal at this time of year?
In this podcast, we look at the idea that the best goals come from intuition. They come out of inspiration, and when those things are in alignment, it’s only a matter of doing.
Tomorrow is the 8th of Jan, and for many, it is the first full week back at work, last week was about going through the motions. Well, it was when I was in corporate. Actually, it was about preparing for a trip to Paris to look at Christmas Decorations. Yes, 20 years back, I finished Christmas only to go back to work and start looking at Christmas.
Thankfully, I have left Christmas decoration planning behind, but I still retain one discovery from that time. Kings Cake.
Kings Cake, Intuition and Inspiration.
In the Harvey House, Christmas ends on the 5th of January at King’s Night, where we have a King’s dinner to celebrate the end of the 12 days of Christmas and to explore intuition and wisdom for the coming year and eat Kings Cake.
Check out the show and hear the story of how I discovered King’s Cake. But more the point, today’s conversation is all about how we bring our intuition and inspiration into our lives to align with our goals and intentions. That is the path towards living a good life.

If you know there is still time to join the million-dollar year experiment, you can find the link below.
The experiment is a one-year program or container held by Joanna Hunter where we look at how it is possible to generate one million dollars in one year. Do check the previous two podcasts, where I explore the project. This week’s topic of conversation was about deserving. Do you feel you deserve it? That’s fascinating, isn’t it?
Because unless we feel that we can have a million, we never will. To find out more about this program and how it could benefit you check out the link The Million Dollar Experiement.

Money Bags
Wednesday Jan 03, 2024
Wednesday Jan 03, 2024
Where do you keep your money bags? Well, what I really mean is, have you explored your money baggage? It has been said there was no shortage of money in the world for all that needed to be done. So why is it not done?
On this show, we are looking at money and the thinking around it. Did you know that money is not real? It is a thought that has become a universal agreement.
The majority of money is ones and zeros on a computer. We have all signed up for this thought experiment and created an economy around it. Money is a convenient tool to transfer energy and intention.
But with that thought experience comes a whole list of baggage. Money baggage: there is no shortage of money; there is, however, a gap in our realities around it., and that is what needs sorting.
On Tuesday, I caught the launch party for My Million Dollar Experiment with Joanna Hunter. She is a metaphysical practitioner and a very successful businesswoman.
Her current business is in the creation of conscious millionaires. As she says, what if there was no shortage of money in the world for all that needed to be done? We could solve climate change and educate and feed people.
How would it be possible to create conscious millionaires? That is where metaphysics comes in because it is about changing the mindset and moving the money baggage.
The launch party was for the Million Dollar Experiment, and the question is.
“Would it be possible for you to make $1,000,000 in the next 12 months? “
Before you disregard that statement, what thought came up for you? I imagine there was a whole list of ifs, buts and nos. It does for me.
My Million Dollar Experiment 2021 results
However, it has been done before. In 2021, Joanna ran that experiment with just over 4000 people, and 16 people declared they made the million. Another 3 kept it quiet. As a percentage, it is less than 0.5%. So, let us consider the numbers.
That 0.5% percentage is better than a lottery win.
How many people came close?
What changed in the lives of those involved?
I am delighted to participate in this experiment because, at the launch party, I could feel my triggers coming up; even creating this podcast and making the offer available to you has shown me that I have some work to do.
Is it Time to Find Your Money Bags?
There is still time; while the experiment has started, the option to join is still open, and it is only $25. Check out the show if you want to know why the price is so low.

Money and thought or thought and money

Money and thought or thought and money, what comes first, the money or thinking about it? In this show, we are considering the energy of money.
Does money have energy? Not directly but money itself is the transfer of energy, which is the representation of energy being transferred from person to person. Before there was money, there was barter, and yet, in some way, we still experience the level of barter in our day-to-day interactions with people.
Many transactions in life are not fiscal, but they do serve us and bring us service or service to others.

In this show, we are touching on the experiment that starts tomorrow, the first of January. Is it possible to create one million dollars or one million pounds in one year?
As I said in the last podcast on the subject, this is about expanding our consciousness so that we can become open to the possibility of generating this level of income, but there are so many little nuances to this, as you’ll hear on the podcast you know I am struggling to get my head around it.
The experiment is not my event; I am a participant in it, and I’d be delighted if you joined us. You can see the link below. It is an affiliate link because that’s how this process works, so do check it out.
But as I said last week, even if I aim for this number and hit a fraction of it, that is still a win, yet even that action itself demonstrates my limited thinking. So it is thought and money that comes first or thought and money?
Here is the link to the Million Dollar Experiment; there are only a few hours left for you to join in.
