Become What You Believe : Shortcast
Sunday Sep 05, 2021
Sunday Sep 05, 2021
“You become what you believe” is a quote from Oprah Winfrey.
The full quote is actually “You become what you believe, not what you think or what you want.” The reason it prompts this week’s podcast topic is because it is the question posed to viewers of a recent Netflix box set I have been watching.
Despite contrary belief, I do still enjoy a good box set on Netflix. So over the last couple of weeks my wife and I have been following Messiah. It’s the story of a man who is professed as being a Messiah and gains international recognition for performing miracles. The Oprah quote is carved into the table of a diner where one of the characters is sitting, and is the point in question for viewers to take away and ponder for themselves.
The reason I bring this up is because it ties in well with last week’s conversation with Nate Rifkin and the forthcoming conversation with Rich Morley that will be released on Wednesday. It is something that comes up time and time again in the podcast and in personal development. In researching this, I also notice that it is even raised in the bible: Matthew 9:29-30
This shortcast explores the power of belief and offers suggestions for changing our lives through changing our beliefs.
Life Passion & Business Podcast is about finding answers to life’s big questions through weekly interview with guest speakers. Nate Rifkin : Reality or Vodka?
Wednesday Sep 01, 2021
Wednesday Sep 01, 2021
Have you ever had one of those moments when facing reality makes you want to reach for the vodka? If the answer is Yes then you may understand how today’s guest Nate Rifkin felt when a regular morning routine of Energy drinks combined with Vodka was preferable to facing the self hatred, career failure and loneliness of his life.
His turning point came whilst practicing Taoist meditation whilst standing on a street corner in a silly costume. Six years later, Nate is now happily married, a published author and is using his natural talents to develop a successful career.
What Nate Rifkin brings to this show is the clarity and freedom he discovered from facing the truth of his situation and using the path of inner change to empower him to take the small daily steps required to walk the path of outer change.

Wayne Mullins : Being Better Every Day
Wednesday Aug 25, 2021
Wednesday Aug 25, 2021
My guest on the show today is Wayne Mullins for whom life is about being a better person every day. Our conversation is his journey through transition and recovery and his commitment to living with deep integrity and commitment to personal progression, relationships and creating experiences that lead to having good stories to tell when the journey is over.
Gaining Insight
What you will discover through this conversation is how ‘script’ and ‘ego’ trip us up, how it is possible to recover from depression and the value of connection and self evaluation.
Like many people, Wayne followed a success script that ultimately leads to crash and burn. If you follow this podcast you will know that breaking this pattern is a repeating theme. and there is good reason for this. We all follow different scripts, but there is a common thread: A script is a path that is not of your choosing. It is an external model given to us through family, friends, culture and media. These models work to an extent, but measuring happiness, success, joy or contentment on outside circumstances leads to breakdown. We begin to lose our way.
The breakthrough occurs when we start to gain clarity on what is more important to us and start to create our own personal success model. That is what happened to me and it’s why I created the Life Passion & Business podcast as a route out of the wilderness. This show is about exploring the journey of others to draw parallels and gain insight into your own existence.
The point is when we choose a path that is in alignment with our wishes, values and beliefs the ups and downs on the journey become part of the quest of life.

Simon Rumney : Dyslexia. Shame & Inspiration
Wednesday Aug 11, 2021
Wednesday Aug 11, 2021
This week’s conversation draws our attention to the plight of non diagnosed Dyslexia through Simon Rumney’s life of shame and the inspiration it now brings to his writing.
Simon has battled with low self-worth, shame and guilt his entire life.
“I was a failure in the womb.”
It all stems from a loveless childhood with traumatized parents and un-diagnosed Dyslexia which left him unprepared for the world. Although he has managed to be hugely successful with his career and prospects, he consistently sabotaged it. Only now, at the age of 66, does he feel close to getting on top of his chronic shame and self-deprecation.
What Simon brings to this conversation is a wealth of inspiration for people with learning disabilities and insight for those who live and work with them. Moreover, it gives the rest of us an opportunity to open our eyes to the ways we communicate and understand each other.

In the podcast I mention the Davis Method: Here is a link to this and the British Dyslexia Association:

Nate Dukes : Through The Darkness
Wednesday Jul 28, 2021
Wednesday Jul 28, 2021
Nate Dukes is living proof that no matter how bad you think you are, or how bad things get, you can get through the darkness. Even when the story you’ve heard all your life is “You’ll Never Change” he is here to tell you it’s a lie. You can change and you can become the person you want to be.
This conversation is a revealing insight into how a devastating self image can lead to misery and disastrous life choices. It is also fully packed with inspiration and wisdom.
Nate’s Story
‘Fun’ for Nate used to be chasing what he thought was the good life – parties, drugs, gambling and spending money. Now he says that ‘fun’ is seeing other people set free from this unhealthy lifestyle.
From a difficult childhood, through the angst of teenage years, the liberation of leaving home and then falling into bad company and unhealthy habits, life has been a journey for Nate. And yet, this roller coaster has brought a lot of insight and wisdom which he shares with us in bucket loads.
“After being in the darkness, I now have the ability, desire and passion to help others and see them come out of that darkness and create their own comeback.”
Since our initial conversation Nate has been working on his book ‘You’ll Never Change’ which is all about proving that you can change. The book was released last month, so we have brought this podcast forward to celebrate it’s launch and share the journey that has brought Nate Dukes through the darkness to be the person he is today.

Hayden Humphrey : Drop The Script
Wednesday Jul 14, 2021
Wednesday Jul 14, 2021
What Hayden brings to the podcast, is a beacon of light that can support others to make the switch before falling into the trap that many don’t recognize until it is too late.
Many of my guests talk about Life Transitions which sadly come about due to serious illness or unforeseen circumstances. I often describe this as the Curve Ball because it appears to come at us unseen and out of the blue. Retrospectively most recognize the signs that led up to this momentous event, and that ignoring the warnings is what caused it.
Hayden is different. He had the wisdom and the tools to turn his life in a direction that supported his well-being before it was too late. What’s more, he also uses his positive outlook to support others in making the switch in their lives.

If you are interested in working with Hayden, he runs a quarterly eight week program entitled ‘Unscript Your LIfe’. He is also offering a downloadable quiz to discover how scripted your life is. Links to both of these are included on our website via the above link.

Ari Galper : Building Trust
Thursday Jul 08, 2021
Thursday Jul 08, 2021
Ari Galper is familiar to me as The World’s #1 Authority on Trust-Based Selling. I have known him for about 20 years and his name is synonymous with direct and information marketing since 2005.
This interview explores the life lessons that led to him creating authentic techniques for building trust in business and personal relationships.
It was a sales call with a dream client that shocked Ari to the core and was a catalyst to start a revolution in the world of sales communication.
“This is so ethically wrong it is dehumanizing…
This is not how human beings should be treating each other.”
He has developed a system for re-building trust that has gone on to save marriages and resolve difficult communication issues with teenagers.

Robyn Harris : Soul Alignment
Thursday Jun 17, 2021
Thursday Jun 17, 2021
Soul Alignment is this week’s topic of conversation with Robyn Harris. It is a story of how following a passion can sometimes take us to a place of hopelessness. However, there is a happy outcome, it just requires going a little further along the road to discover it.
When I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, Robyn’s considered reply was Doctor Doolittle. It is hardly surprising then, that the future held a place for animals and for language interpretation. Albeit a very different type of interpretation than that of the children’s story book character.
Today Robyn is the founder of EQUENERGY: Wellbeing Naturally. She describes herself as a Soul Alignment Mentor and works with people at the end of their rope, needing support.
Robyn is currently offering her ‘Feel Your Way from Stress into Flow’ workshops on Zoom and is planning to run them in person again when lockdown restrictions lift. Tickets and further information are available along with all her other website and social links at:

Terry Tucker : Cancer Warrior
Wednesday May 05, 2021
Wednesday May 05, 2021
My guest this week is Terry Tucker, an extraordinary man and cancer warrior who has chosen to live a healthy and fulfilling life even in the face of imminent death.
A Passion for Law Enforcement
After graduating from college with a Business Administration degree, Terry began work in the corporate headquarters of Wendy’s, the International Hamburger Chain. From there he progressed into Hospital Administration, but none of that was his passion. He really longed to work in law enforcement.
Terry’s grandfather had been a Chicago Cop in the 1920’s to 1950’s, so Terry’s dad had first hand experience of the dangers that life choice involved. He did not want that for his son and diametrically opposed Terry’s decision. Instead he guided Terry towards the safer route of college and a business career. At the time, Terry’s dad had cancer, so out of respect and a desire not to cause him more pain, Terry acquiesced.
After his father’s death, Terry had a second chance at his dream career when he came across an advert to train as a reserve police officer. After discussing it with his wife, he enrolled and followed through with joining the reserve force. From there he progressed into working full time as a police officer and shares some of his stories as a rookie cop facing gun fire and as an undercover narcotics investigator.
But the life threatening experiences Terry faced in the police force, are insignificant compared to the daily battle he now endures.
What It Takes To Be Cancer Warrior
Terry’s greatest life challenge first came to light in 2012. What initially appeared as an insignificant looking callous on the base of his foot, turned out to be something far more sinister. The diagnosis was as a rare form of cancer called Acral Lentiginous Melanoma.
After undergoing surgery for the tumour, Terry spent the next 5 years on weekly injections of Interferon which gave him severe flu-like symptoms for two to three days every week. He lost fifty pounds and lived with constant fatigue, nausea and body aches. It got to the point where the medicine became so toxic to his body that he ended up in an intensive care unit with a fever of 108° (usually considered incompatible with being alive).
The Interferon was stopped and the cancer immediately came back which led to having his left foot amputated in 2018. In April 2020 (as the world was dealing with the initial outbreak of the Covid pandemic) Terry was back in hospital alone and afraid, facing an operation to have his leg amputated above the knee.
In his written biography Terry says the one thing he has learned through all his pain and suffering is that:
“You have two choices in life. You can succumb to the debilitating discomfort and misery, or you can learn to embrace it and use it to make you a stronger and better human being.“
Terry has chosen the latter. But this heroic choice and his battle with cancer is not over.
Facing A Life Sentence
Listening to him talk so calmly about his challenges, you could be forgiven for not realizing that Terry is currently dealing with tumours in both lungs. The treatments are no longer about curing him; the best they can do is buy him a bit more time. Terry says his passion was to work in law enforcement and because he was able to embrace and live that passion, facing the end is not so scary. In fact he is excited to see what’s on the other side of death. He tells people…
“Wherever you are in life, look at the end game.
What are people going to say about you at your funeral?
What is your legacy going to be?“
This is an extraordinary story and undoubtedly Terry is one of the greatest cancer warrior I have met. His courage is an inspiration and I hope it brings insight and hope to others facing similar challenges.
Thank you for joining me with Terry Tucker. You can learn more about Terry through his website ‘Motivational Check’ and his book Sustainable Excellence (links below).

Paul Glover : The No B S Coach
Wednesday Apr 28, 2021
Wednesday Apr 28, 2021
Today’s guest ‘Paul Glover calls himself the No B S ‘Work Performance’ Coach. This podcast is about how he earned that reputation.
Paul’s childhood was strongly influenced by his father, a union man at GM who hated his job but strongly stood up for the rights of the workforce. This is what inspired Paul to become a Labour Lawyer. So, after military service he dedicated his attention to building his career, eventually rising to become Vice President and Labour Lawyer for the organization he worked for.
“As With Every Good Story, There’s An Up and a Down”
Paul’s down was his inability to resist opportunities to receive kickbacks and bribes and he had a business partner who was prone to drug and cocaine abuse. This was a lethal combination that led to some pretty dubious activities. Being found out, and having his partner testify against him, culminated in a 5½ year prison sentence.
“If I had not gone to prison I would have died”
Being incarcerated gave Paul plenty of time for resentment and reflection on the direction his life was heading. Boredom eventually led to studying religion and philosophy. But, coming out of prison was a rude awakening to the realities of finding a job and being snubbed by people he used to know.
“They tell you, you’ve done your time and everything will be okay.
It’s not going to be okay!”
However, Paul did manage to turn things around and has put his life experiences to good use. Being a labour lawyer gave him definitive insights and opportunities to understand people objectively. Being a union negotiator taught him how to deal with and stand up to conflict. In prison Paul also learnt how to avoid conflict, engage people who are emotionally distraught and support people through difficult situations.
“Everybody earns their scars, and you should be able to learn from them.
After all, you’ve paid the pain price to get them.”
These life experiences have enabled Paul to become the no b.s. coach he is today. He believes there is a lot of untapped potential in people, and his driving passion is to draw that out. Paul is not afraid to address the blind spots people don’t want to talk about. So his contribution is to help his clients see the cause of a problem and support them through the process of overcoming it.
Paul says success is being relevant, interesting and memorable as someone who cares. And, the meaning of life is to fulfill your potential and be the best person you can be. For Paul, that means having a positive impact on the people he meets every day.

This week’s topic is about that well known phrase “Living the Dream” and it has come about because of a conversation with a shop assistant earlier this week.
As it is always my way to open conversations, I asked this young assistant “how is your day going” and she replied with “Oh yeah, living the dream” in a sarcastic sort of way. Ignoring the sarcasm I continued with “do you genuinely mean that” and she looked at me as though I’d just done something inappropriate.
As we were coming to the end of the transaction I left her by gently suggesting “maybe you need to look at that and do something about it”. But this conversation has stuck with me all week and that is why I am bringing the question up here.

Russ Avery : Eco Entrepreneur
Wednesday Mar 31, 2021
Wednesday Mar 31, 2021
Today’s guest is Russ Avery, Eco Entrepreneur and Specialist Marketer for Sustainable Businesses. He was brought up in Helensburgh on Scotland’s north western coast.
Growing up under the influence of David Attenborough on TV, he had an outdoor childhood. Because of this he developed an early appreciation of the natural world that called him into his future career.
He is a sustainability marketing consultant. Both of these are close to my own passion and interest, so we had to be careful not to get too carried away. If you have listened to my previous shows, you will know I can easily go down a rabbit hole with my guests.
From Languages to Sustainability
In education, Russ was a natural with languages and studied French and Spanish to an advanced level. University followed, and breaking the pattern, he chose a degree in French and Russian.
However a language degree is not that vocational, and on leaving Exeter University, in 2007 his future was unclear. By 2009 he had settled on the idea of sustainability. So taking a course with the Open University opened the door to his first break in the industry.
A New Career
Russ’ first job was with Seaweb which is a small ocean conservation charity. They raise awareness of overfishing, sea acidification and bridging the gap between science and communications.
Our conversation follows how Russ found his ikigai when he moved into the sustainability sector. This is what ultimately started his marketing consultancy to help sustainable businesses communicate well.
Russ is a natural connector of people, so we had a wide-ranging chat. So we covered how social media and networking played a pivotal role in his business journey.
Naturally we talked about sustainability and how business is changing. We also talked about how you can make a difference in your own life with just a straightforward change of attitude.
I hope you enjoy this Life Passion & Business Podcast with Russ Avery Eco Entrepreneur.

On The Bus With You?
Monday Mar 29, 2021
Monday Mar 29, 2021
Is it on the bus with you, or are you traveling towards it?
What I am talking about is your passion and your happiness.
Gordon Mullan is one of the people who has taken up my request to discuss podcasts (more on that below) and what makes some stand out from others.
Gordon is a specialist on live events, he hosts events and trains speakers to use virtual technology so this was a very helpful conversation for me. One of the things he brought up is when people are looking outside of themselves (“I will be happy when…”) then internal contentment is difficult to find.
This brings me to Gratitude. It is the key to finding that inner happiness that enables us to achieve those elusive goals with greater ease. Getting on board with gratitude brings you closer to inner happiness and reigniting your passion and purpose.
On the bus with you is a conversation about this idea that when we seek what is outside of us the path to happiness will always be elusive.
